I just got off the phone with DirecTV and spoke to a couple of people regarding which receiver I would get (Samsung 160 or Hughes). They told me there is no way to specify because they put the order into the warehouse and it then gets shipped. I wouldn't mind the Hughes, but my new Hitachi 65S500 has the DVI, so the Sammy would work nicely. It is a shame because the price it great for that package.

I guess I have to find some really cheap online specials.

From what others have said about everyone has been getting the Samsung box. If they send you the Hughes you can just refuse delivery.

I thought about refusing it, but wouldn't I be locked into the 1 year deal of paying the extra $10.99 for HD when I couldn't even use it?

I have seen the Samsung with 3LNB dish for just over $600 on Ebay (new).

The Zenith SAT520 looks really nice, but a bit more $. I was hoping Best Buy was running their $99 dish - $99 rebate this week but no dice.

If you read the long thread on the $399 deal you'll see not a single person has gotten the Hughes receiver. So it is a near 100% that you will get the Samsung.

If DirecTV had any Hughes receivers I'm sure they would have sent them out - I'd say they don't have any more of the old model since it has been replaced with a new model (actually being made by LG/Zenith as the newer model of the Zenith 520 you talk about - LG 3200A clone). So when they do start sending out Hughes I bet it will be the new model - which should actually be better than the T160.

Good point. Tough decision to make. Buying the pieces separately would cost me approx. $200-$250 more, plus I would have to install it.

I hate having to roll the dice and hope for the best. I will have to sleep on it.

Thanks for the help.

Mack, you cannot be locked into an additional service unless you have equipment activated with that service. Someone else posted that the installer couldn't get his service working and as a result D* let him out of the deal without a problem.

Mack,

I ordered the HD package from D* on Thursday and received the Samsung today. The offer runs until 12/31 as I am sure you are aware.

IF you want the LG clone, which as Chris has noted, should be better then the T160, it might be worth the wait until or IF D* purges their supply of the Sammy.

As you write, you can roll the dice, or perhaps be patient until the end of December if you want the newer LG/Zenith. It is a crap shoot and I was tenative myself hoping the older model Hughes would not show up. When the Fed Ex guy showed up with the Samsung, I gave him a handshake and a diet Pepsi. He seemed to like that small perk.

Either way, for me it was a nice buy as I needed a new dish, an installer to do the ladder work and something new to entertain me during the coming winter months.

Much Luck,
Charles

When I had to have a replacement unit ordered for me (to cover a failing unit under the Protection Plan), I was told I would get another Samsung provided that inventory was available (it was). I was also told that if no Samsung units were available that I'd get the Zenith 520, a unit I didn't even know they had. I was told there was no way a Hughes would be coming due to no inventory.

I was told the same thing - can't guarantee which unit will be installed. I told them that I needed the simultaneous output only available on the Samsung, so the customer retention rep gave me a $200 credit and told me to go buy what I wanted. I wound up picking up the new Huges HTL at $369, activated it last night and received my credit immediately. For current customers the best deals are going to be with customer retention reps - don't even bother speaking with the front line customer service reps.

I spoke to neither the 'front line reps' nor the 'retention reps'. In fact, many seeking the promotion went to the Installation Department.

Just a thought, if I were to order it and the older Hughes is delivered to my house, won't they charge me for the equipment if I do not activate? Since I am not home during the day, the UPS or FedEx guy will just leave the box on my porch. I guess I could cancel the install and send the package back, but that would cost $ for shipping.

Well, they cannot charge you for equipment you do not receive, right? That's the whole idea of refusing the delivery. They are simply slapping a shipping label onto the STB's box and not double-boxing the equipment. I knew well ahead of my signing for anything what I was signing for.

You do realize that there is a monster thread regarding this promotion, and I do not know of anyone that was sent the Hughes unit. Either everyone received the Samsung, or they received a $200 credit to their account and told to go to any retail store to get whatever they wanted.

Done!

Oct 22nd is the install date.

They told me that it includes the dish setup and just a receiver swap. Since I am adding the HDTV to my living room, I guess I need to run a new line to the dish.

Call them back up and tell them that this is not acceptable!!

You should not have to wait that long to have it installed.

Do you live in the back woods or something?

I would understand Nov 22... but Oct 22..... That is like 300 days away... Make sure that you get prorated for the install at least....

LOL. It has been one of those days. I meant Nov. 22, can't believe this year is almost gone. I could have had it sooner, but I need it to be installed on a Saturday.

Actually, I took it to mean they would go back in time and out-service the competition by providing the HDTV service ahead of his desires and order. :D

Even though they are in the space age... I think time travel is a little bit out of the picture. Unless they combine thier "spots" and cause a rif....

Okay, now I am scared. I ordered earlier this week since EVERYBODY is getting the sammy for this. Box and dish was to come today, but they called me and said "the dish will come today, but the box is backordered due to overwhelming demand, so it won't be till next week that it arrives. We have re-scheduled your install for Monday, to Friday"

Okay, NOW I am really scared that I am going to get the crappy hughes, and not the Samsung.

buyer beware!

But if they had any Hughes boxes they would have shipped them and their wouldn't be a backorder. But . . . . there is a new Hughes box which most would probably prefer to the Sammy. So I would think if they didn't have any of the old Hughes than any new ones they would get in would be the brand new model that just came out.

I could not believe how easy it was to get the credit from D*. All I did was type in my phone number, hit “0†then “3†for “cancel subscription. Obviously this takes you directly to the customer retention staff. I talked to a guy named Nick and explained that I was very distraught over not being able to select which STB I would have in my HT room to go with my High End (to some) components – I had “fought†for about 2 hours a couple of weeks ago trying to get someone send me the Samsung box to no avail, which they had made notes of in the computer. I asked if there was any way to compensate me for having to “overpay†at a retail store in order to be able to select which box I wanted and he stated that the best he could do was $150 credited to my account once I activate the box! Well, I’m not one to look a gifthorse in the mouth so I’ll take it and run with the HTL HD for $220 for all intents and purposes.

That was amazingly easy, I was prepared to put up a fight to get it (after previous dealings with D*) and there was no need for it. This guy was very helpful. I probably could’ve gone to a manager and fought to get the $200 previously reported (I’m pretty good at that) but for $220 for the HTL HD I’m a happy camper. I’ll be setting it up this week. He did say that when I do get the box to go straight to the customer retention department on the phone menu, i.e. “cancel you subscriptionâ€, and let them activate the box since they are the ones issuing the credit.

Thanks “ex007†for the tip. I was very anxious to check out some of this NFL season in HD without having to wait for next season. Can’t thank you enough!!!!

I am assuming that once the old Hughes are out of stock they will probably not give out anymore credits.

You guys are a bad influence!!

I was reading this thread - and as it seems that everyone is getting the Samsung (and not the Hughes) I finally decided to orcder this.

The ish will be coming within 4 days and I scheduled install next Saturday Nov 29th.

Hopefully I'll also get the Samsung box.

Quick question: I know that I now have to get and install an OTA antenna (prolly get the Zenith in Radio Shack). But, can I get away with installing it in my attic or do I have to mount it on the roof?

Chris

Chris,

The answer to your question is not an easy one to answer. There are a lot of variables that will come into play. If you live in NY, my best GUESS would be you may even be able to get by with something right by the TV, rather then go through the exercise of the attic or on the roof.

Some people who live very close to a metro area, have had success with a cheap antenna picked up at Radio Shack with no hassle of installation.

Also, you might want to go to this web site and enter your zip code to acquire an indication of what type of antenna you would need IF the simple solution is not feasable.

http://www.antennaweb.org/aw/welcome.asp

Much luck,
Charles

Chris, I installed a Channel master 4228 in my attic. The majority of the OTA stations in my market are +30 miles from me and I had no problem getting them without resorting to outside-mountnig or the use of an amplifier.
