Hehe, thanks, but I have not had the best of luck in terms of getting customer service representitives doing the 'right customer service thing' as opposed to the wrong customer serice thing. Still, D*'s customer retention department has been more good than bad.

Call them Wanman and see what happens. I was expecting a fight, but was really amazed that I got it without uttering the "I'll switch to cable" bit. I think at this point the market for HD programming is so tight and competitive that they don't want to give up any customers right now, so they'll do whatever they can to keep you on. Give them a call.

Has anyone had any luck getting D* to give a $350 credit for activating a self purchased HD unit? I need an "RF" remote for my current setup, and i dont believe the hughes box has that option. For that reason i have been leaning towards getting an HD300.

Does anyone know if the upcoming HDTivo unit has a RF remote?

Calling before purchase is more likely get you an equipment credit and/or programming credits. If you call them after you've already purchased a STB locally, your odds of getting any credits are slim to none.

Call 800 600-8977 and tell them you need a different HD STB than the ones they offer, and are considering buying one if they'll help with the high up front cost. If they don't offer to help, tell them you'll dump D* for cable or Dish, which have no high up-front costs.

Are you sure, Scott? I don't know much about projectors, but the HTL-HD has a VGA style output labeled "RGBHV". Isn't this the same? Unfortunatly, there is no way to know which receiver you'll be getting until it arrives.

I then got greedy and tried to get Premier for $20 off, but they said "Whoa", you just got a ton of credits. So I'm a happy Directv Camper today and forever.
I just got the $20 off for 6 mths too. Directv is awesome. They remind me all the time why I hate cable. Directv #1 in my book. I will never switch.

The good news never ends. CBS-HD on Directv......Whooopeeee!!!!!

You are right, it does have RGB, so I guess if I did this it would not matter wich one I got either.

Scott made the same mistake I did yesterday. I was thinking people were nuts about RGB being available on the Hughes, but I was thinking about the Hughes HIRD-E86 and not the brand new HTL-HD HD-STB.

Got the deal! Got the receiver and local antenna installed for a net of $99.00!!

No HBO or Showtime unfortunately. Did get HD channels free for one month.

It went VERY smooth, without any hassles.

Are any of you folks "new subs"? I'm (well documented) still waiting on my "free" 811 (going on 4 weeks now) and if I can get a HD receiver for only $99 more than my "free" I'd happily be done w/E*.

TIA,

Brian

Make sure you use the 1-800-600-8977 number. :)
Thank you all so much for this thread! I have been a D* customer for over 5 years now, and I've always loved D*. I was about to plonk down the $449 for the HD setup, but after calling Customer Retention, I got it all (including OTA antenna) for $99 after credit! They even credited me for the shipping/tax, so my final total was $501.53 - $402.53 credit = $99. Oh, and he gave me 2 months of Total Choice Platinum for free, too (gave me the choice of 6 months Showtime or 2 months Platinum).

Getting installed next Friday (the 16th) - I can't wait to see the Superbowl in HD.

The guy I talked to (Jim) was knowledgeable and very friendly. I merely mentioned the $99 deal and he said "Yep, I'm aware of that - I got the memo". If you haven't called the 800-600-8977 number yet, do it!

Are there any noticeable differences between the Samsung SIR-TS160 and Hughes HTL-HD receivers?

STL,
The Hughes HTL-HD has no signal strength meter (next firmware update may fix that).
The Hughes HTL-HD has no on-screen Caller-ID. Samsung has caller-id (number only - no name display).
Samsung has compatibility "issues" with certain displays.

There are probably several other differences.

Jake:

Jake:

I saw your post about the Direct TV deal u got for $99 - that is just amazing! I am looking into getting the OTA Antenna as well, because my local cable company only offers HBO and Discovery in HDTV - and of course, I cannot get any local channels being in a crappy market (Altoona, PA).
However, with an OTA, I can get CBS, ABC, PBS and another local station here (I checked Titan TV).

When you got this deal, how do they bill you? Do they bill the entire 500 dollars to your credit card, and then give you a credit with your DirectTV bill, or do they just simply charge the $99 to your credit card? Or is it to your DirectTV bill?

Just curious. I got one card but it doesnt have 500 left on it - but if I could get it with the 99 charged to it, I would jump on this. I wanna see the Super Bowl in HDTV as well!!!

Let me know.... thanks in advance!

arxaw,

Thanks for the info! I assume I would have to be paying for call-ID service with my local phone company for the rec'r to display the info, right? If so, that's a non issue for me.

I see you are in LR....so how 'bout them Hogs beating Mizzou! :) Although I've lived in Missouri almost 10 years now and my wife in a MU alum, I'm still a Razorback fan -- since I'm originally from AR (and grew up in LR and Conway).

Since I would be a new customer I wish they would offer it to us.

But I must admit it is nice seeing them treat the loyal longterm customers better then new ones. Usually it is the other way around.

I'm still confused (like that's new). Is this a promotion for new or existing customers, and if for existing customers how long does one have had to been with D* to get it?

It SOUNDS like you need to have been a customer for 2 years, and average >$40 month on your DirecTV bill.

PMurphy: They charge the entire amount to your credit (or debit) card and credit your account for all (minus $99).

Not true. Just called the 800 listed in another post in this thread and was given the $99 deal with no hesitation from the rep. Got mine setup for install.

He did also mention that if people wait until February that they will be able to bill the D* bill directly and then issue credit, again directly to the D* bill. Means no out of pocket by way of Credit card. I can't wait until then to get it set up though so I did it now.

Question.

Currently, my only DTV receiver is a Direct/TIVO receiver. I assume the new Sammy/Hughes receiver will replace that receiver and I will have to move the TIVO receiver into the bedroom, correct? I could also wait for the HD TIVO, but the $99 deal is just too good to pass up.

Thanks for everyone's helpful information.

As an existing D* "out of contract" customer subscribed to HD since it began, I thought I would try calling the 800 600-8977 retention number. I told the rep that my 12 month commitment had ended and I was considering cable's Dish buyback offer (I did consider it, but I would never actually go back to cable).

When I asked the D* rep if she could make me a deal to keep me as a subscriber, she offered me six months of HBO+Showtime+TMC for $2/month. She also offered to drop the price of TotalChoice Plus by $4/month.

I told her I'd take it, and ended up with tons of extra premium channels for a total monthly bill of $2 less than what I was previously paying.

It never hurts to ask :)
