Both CSRs that I spoke with immediately knew about the $99 deal, but both said I would need to wait until I'd been with them for a full two years. I want to get the superbowl in HD (I'm in a CBS O&O market), so I really need it installed by the end of this month. My guess is that if I really push the issue (which I haven't) I could probably get them to give me the deal today.
D* CR CSRs seem to be pretty good. If your 2 years ends 10 days after the SB, you should get 'em to hook you up. I'd be surprised (especially if you're out of contract on Feb 11) if you simply told them "Hey...I just want to watch the SuperBowl in HD...can't we work this out?" If they say no tell them "Well if we can't get this worked out on Feb 11 I'll be signing up for E* - because this is ridiculous."

I'd imagine they're not going to lose a customer over a 10 day wait.

Keep calling them.

Like I said I've been a customer for a long time and have seen free receivers/directivos pass me by while I have to pay $100 to get each unit.

I signed up for the $399 HD offer in Nov. At the time I complained about the lack of HD, they gave $100 in programming credits.

I then read about the $99 HD offer, and they credited me about $350 in credits to make up for all the mths I've been a customer.

I then read about the $20 off premier programming for 6 mths and got that to.

They have just retained this customer for life.

Thanks for the valuable info folks!

I'm now onboard, with install scheduled for next week. I got the $99 deal with zero hassle. It was funny though, I used the "cable for HD" ploy and the rep started selling me on the benefits of 1080i (via DTV) versus 720p (which he claimed was the max that coax could handle). Whatever - I didn't argue with him - as it seemed to make him feel important.

They credited my account for everything (shipping, tax, etc) less the $99, and gave me one month of free HD programming with the ability to cancel that at any time with no penalty. I've been a customer for just over 7 years...

Regards,
Jeff

FedEx delivered my dish and HTL HD receiver 1/8/04. so they are still using that deivery method. Why don't you order the stuff, set up the install, and when the goods arrive install it yourself? After you install it, just call and cancel the install, tell them you just couldn't wait to jump into the HD world. I would install it myself but this is my busy season and I leave too early and get home too late. I don't feel comfortable 30 feet up on a ladder in the dark.
Also, I have been with D only 18 months and I got the whole deal taxes and all for $109, I'd keep calling.

Fedex also delivered a new dish and HTL-HD to me a few hours ago. I scheduled the install in 2 weeks, but I set it up myself.

Thanks to the forum I just got a credit back...not as much as I would have liked but better than nothing. They gave me a $177 credit to my account. I had just had the $399 deal installed at the end of December.

They were rather annoyed it appeared that I had read this online....I was told the $99 deal didn't start until January and I really shouldn't expect anything just because I read it online. Still, the Hughes HD and new dish installed for $250 is a good deal.

I just signed up for the $99 deal. Details:

-I already have an HD receiver activated, but not the HD package.
-Customer for over two years, $45 for less than one year.
-I used the 'customer retention' number mentioned earlier (800-600-8977).
-I just told the rep "I tried HD but could not make my receiver work on my display, now I heard there is a new HD receiver for $99 offer". This is true, because my Zenith 520 will not display properly on my Sampo LME-17S3 HD-ready monitor but the HTL-HD will. He said right away "you qualify".
-He cannot guarantee the Hughes receiver (same as everyone else).
-The equipment will be shipped to the installer, not to me. He said 'they are doing that now because shipments have been lost'. (Maybe they have a list of "bad" zip codes?) I said I preferred it go to my house since it is on my credit card, but he could not.
-Install scheduled for Thursday 1/15 afternoon. Since I already have an oval dish, I will ask the installer to let me use the new one on my motorhome and I will "sign off" on the install as mentioned above. (The same as I did on my last 'installation included' deal.) Maybe he will leave me a hunk of RG-6 cable and connectors again as well.

I just called 800 600-8977 and told them I wanted the HDTV Deal. That's all I said.

After the CSR collected my account information, he went offline for about 1 minute and came back and said I qualify for the $99 deal.

There was absolutely no discussion about other companies deals or leaving D*, or what other people got.

Maybe I was lucky, but I couldn't be happier, John

Did you get credited for tax (and shipping)?

Has anyone been credited the tax amount too? Also, is everyone getting charged tax?

Has anyone that received the $99 deal used customer retention in the last 6-12 months to get any other credits. I'm thinking that they might only give the deal to people who aren't already under a commitment and to people that haven't received "retention credits" recently. Thanks.

As an update from my previous post several pages ago - my account balance at Directv.com shows a whopping big credit. Since I just got the deal from the Rep this afternoon I'd say they are moving pretty fast on the paperwork.

My credit is there too. They told me it would go back to my credit card as a credit, we'll see. I got the equipment today. It came FedEx Ground, not 2nd day like somebody else said they got. My install is scheduled for Monday morning, so I guess I'll wait. The CSR said if I self-install, and any of the equipment doesn't work, D* won't replace it, I'd have to work through the manufacturer's warranty. If I let the installer open everything, then D* will replace anything that doesn't work. I'll only miss 2 NFL games in HD anyway (the Fox games don't count since they're EDTV) I figure it's not worth the risk.

To answer the previous questions about account history:
D* customer for 6+ years, $70+/month the whole time, NFL ST every year, no late payments, no previous retention credits.

Just got mine installed today. Installer brought the receiver (Samsung). I didn't need the dish since I already have the triple-LNB oval dish. I noticed that the credit hadn't shown up on my account yet, so I called the DirecTV customer retention again. They apologized for the credit not appearing and processed it right away. Now I've got a $395.11 credit on my account!! :D

I have been with them 2+ years and added a new DTivo on 12/27/03. This put me into another year with D*. But, I called and I got the $99.00 deal without a problem. My friend that has only been with D* for 18 months and got the same deal. He had to call them 5 times but he got it. Sometimes you just have to work at it. Just keep calling.

Well, persistence pays off.

I got the $99 deal on my third try. I had to be politely persistent, and asked him to check with his supervisor. The CSR checked and after 5 minutes of hold time he came back and said OK, I can process your order.

He said the equipment would be fedex'ed to me.

I let him set up the pro install, but I asked him what I'd need to do if I need to reschedule the installation. He said that if I need to rescehdule or cancel the work order to call 1-888-355-7530.

I'll just do the install myself and cancel after I've activated.

Now I'm just crossing my fingers hoping everything shows up by fedex sometime next week and that nothing is missing or goes wrong.

Superbowl in HD this year, baby! I'm pretty psyched!

p.s. There was no committment to the HD package. I only have to keep total choice or higher for a year.

I just got off the phone w/ a CSR and the best deal they were offering was $199 for the hdtv rec. Also, willing to throw in HBO/SHOW for 6 months for an extra $2. Any Ideas to get them down to $99?

As a long time Directv customer I will give this a shot, if this goes well, I will then at the end of the trial period of my VOOM will cancel, get my $815 back and be way ahead of the game. I will also question the lack of HD content compared to VOOM.

Well the HBO/Show should be normally worth about 20 or so a month so 6 months for 12 vs 120 gets you the extra 100. You might just try calling them again.

When I called to say that I didn't see the credit on my account, the customer retention rep asked if I knew what amount was charged to my credit card. I was able to look it up online and told her that I was charged $494.11. So she said, "OK, I need to issue credit of $395.11." Looks like I got credit on shipping and tax. I'll take it ;)

Just got off the phone - I, too, was only offered the $199 deal. I asked why "my friend" got the $99 deal, and she confirmed that it was for people over 2 years with D* - I've only been with them for 18 months.

$445 to my credit card, with a $246 service credit on my account. Oh, and 3 months free Showtime was all I could wrestle out of the CSR as far as extras go.

Still pretty happy though, as I will be returning my HTL-HD to CC within the 30 day window, and hoping to receive same by Fedex (the CSR said it would come directly to my house, unlike others have reported.)

Jay-

I had just changed to my Zenith HD receiver, and also got the 'free' LNB C kit, in September 2003. This did not affect my getting the $99 deal. As the rep told me though, my 'commitment timer' just gets reset to one year when I activate the new HD receiver. Hmm... When the HD DirecTivos come out, I may have a reason to 'reset' again. :)

I came out feeling good! I got a different CSR, probably at a different call center run by a different outsourced company. Got the HDTV receiver for $99, and got HBO/SHOW included for free for 6 months.

At first they stated the best deal they could offer me was for $199. I asked the chic if she could ask her supervisor if there was any possibility of looking into this for me because I could not understand how my friend got the deal and I was not eligible... put me on hold for 5 minutes and then gave me the OK! bam knocked off 100 bucks...

I bought the hughes hd box last week at best buy for 499 and activated it. Now I hear about this $99 deal. I have been a directv subscriber for 10 years and spend at least $70 per month.

Any suggestions on what I can do? Should I call them and ask for the deal or try to get a credit on what I bought? Anyone run into this? Or should I try to get another receiver from them for my other room? I do have another hd tv? Thanks for the advice.

For those of you able to get the 99$ deal, are you required to subscribe to the HD package for 12 months?

I got the $99 deal and I was not required to get the HD package for 12 months. They gave me a free month of the HD pkg. I did have to agree to 12 months of at least 31.99 service, no problem, I was going to do that anyway. Get the deal, easiest $350 you'll make this year.

I find this surprising in that most that took D* up on the $399 deal were required to commit to a 12-month HD package while the first month was free. I feel jilted all over again. :(

Just wanted to add my experience.

Called 800.600.8977

first person i spoke with confirmed the 99$ offer and stated that she needed to check to see if i qualify. I did since i have been a subscriber for close to 5 years and spend nearly 50$ a month now.

no HD programming requirement
HD receiver
no hbo or showtime (she said i needed to already be a subscriber to that to get the 6 months free)
installation including a dish mounted antenna scheduled for 1/15

also, i pay by credit card monthly and she said that if the credit amount is more than 2 months of service, the policy is that a refund can be requested (instead of the large service credit). this will go directly to my credit card but it takes ~30 days.

Thanks all for the info.
