D* has extended their $399 offer for existing customers to 6/30/04. I could have posted the link but it can be varified by going to their site.

Had it been me I would have waited until after Christmas to extend it.

Edited to change title. D* considers this thread to be an "affront". At least that is what the guy at the Customer Retention desk told me after I mentioned that I heard about the $99 on the Internet. I didn't mention AVS. If he doesn't know about AVS already he is probably a loser anyway.

That's good and bad. I was really hoping for a better deal than the 399 but at least they did raise it.

hmm.... if they're extending the upgrade to HD offer that far, something tells me we're about to get another delay in the HD Tivo release. :(

I received the $399 deal from D*, received a $75 credit, AND did not need to subscribe to their $10.99/mth HD pkg!...not to shabby huh. I'm more interested in receiving local OTA HD signals.

I really wish D* would offer an inexpensive HD receiver like E* is. With the HDTivo just around the corner, I'd actually consider spending $200 on an HD recever now and still buy the HDTivo when it's released. As is, $400 is just a little much.

Josh,

Call D* and ask to talk to a Customer Retention Specialist. The normal operators don't have the authority to give these deals. Plus, you have to be out of any previous contract commitments with D*.

I called and got a free triple LNB dish with free installation, plus a $175 credit to my account. I simply told them that I was considering my HD options between cable and D*, and that I wanted to purchase my own STB (I don't want the Hughes or Samsung boxes). Let them know you're going to have to spend a lot of money to get set up with them, and it would be cheaper to go the cable route. Also, I didn't have to sign up for the HD package. I'll do that once I get my Sony HD300.

None of the HDTV D* receivers on Ebay I've seen are going for less than 400 unless your getting an older Hughes

You don't have to be out of contract to get a retention deal from Direct. I just purchased the $399 deal as well and was under contract until June or July. Prior to placing my order I shopped around and Dish offerred me a pretty good deal to switch to them, good enough in fact that I would've been money ahead even with the ETF. She offerred me $100 and I countered with "cover the shipping and you got a deal' to which she said done. I didn't bother trying to haggle on the HD package cause I watch alot of Discovery shows anyway.

So you basically got the 399 deal for 299 and they gave you free shipping?

Sweet!

Yeah, thats how it went. I don't normally work the system on upgrades, but when I think about the money I've spent on programming alone I don't feel bad at all.

A friend just got a ridiculous offer from DirectTV for the HD package.

Something like $200-300 for the Hughes HTL-HD box. Since he purchased the box himself he got a DirecTV $150 credit, plus free HBO and SHOW for 6 months....Free install of the dish....etc.

They seem desperate to keep customers....the cost of the hardware is irrelavant.

No more specifics....

Eventually they will pay you to watch sat TV.

Cheers

How did he happen to get the HTL-HD box for 200 to 300? Was that from DirecTV or a local retailer? The cheapest I've seen them is 470.

D* is offering existing customers the HTL-HD, oval dish, and installation for $399. Shipping is extra. As an existing D* customer (7 mths), I spoke with the customer retention dept. several times and expressed my desire to receive OTA HD, but was hesitant because of the costs involved. The first agent offered me a $75 credit for me to purchase my own STB, but I explained that $75 barely touched the cost on an STB. I concluded by asking her to note in my file that I desire to terminate my contract when my 12 mth commitment was met. During my next call two days later, I mentioned that I was interested in the $399 offer, but that a previous rep had offered me a $75 credit towards the $399. I said that if that offer still stood, and it was understood that I didn't want the $10.99 HD pkg, I would accept the offer. The said "yes" and so did I. The STB has worked perfectly the past several weeks and OTA HD is nothing less that amazing!

I got on with the customer retention department too. I told them that I loved my DirecTivo, but it was hard to justify spending so much money on a reciever and going through the pains of setting up a separate antenna when I could rent a box from Comcast for $5 a month. They gave me $150 towards the $399 package.

I haven't moved on it yet - my Philips plasma won't be delivered until 1/13/04 - but I plan on it. Don't settle for $75! And if you know your cable provider will supply the box, use that as leverage.

To be fair, my contract did expire this month so I would not have paid a penalty to switch.

Today I called DirecTV, told them I was thinking of switching to cable b/c of the high cost of HD w/ them. I was routed around and had to tell one of the operators to get me to the Customer Retention Department.

Once there, I wound up with this deal:

For $449 I got the Hughes HTL-HD STB, dish, OTA antenna, and installation. There was no shipping charge since the installer brings the equipment. I also got a $250 credit against my DirecTV bill. I did have to subscribe to the HD programming.

My credit offer went from $100 to $200 to $250. So just keep asking.

Wow that is basically a HD rec for 200 bucks. Pretty much the same as for an existing customer on E* to get an 811. Marshall did you have to get the HD package as well or just the TC?

Marshall, were you allowed to specify that you wanted the HTL-HD? I have called a few times, and each time I've been told that I would get either the Hughes or Samsung but would not be able to choose which one. The main thing holding me back from this deal is the lack of choice.

Calypso, I think I was required to get the HD package ($10.99/month) -- but I'm not sure. The rep said that I had to commit for one year to a Total Choice package -- but that is what I have now. I'm assuming I am req'd to get the HD package. I want it anyway. I'd like ESPN in HD and would like the movie channels that way also.

Mike515 - Yes, I was allowed to specifically request the Hughes HTL-HD. I have a Hughes box now and am familiar and comfortable with their product (I'm hoping the interface is similar to my current box). I know nothing about the Samsung and, although I'm sure it's fine, I don't want it. The rep asked me which box I wanted.

I just called and the best they would give me was two months of TC free or 68 bucks worth. I said no. I figure I'll call back later and try for a better deal. I think part of the problem is I'm not an existing customer I'm a previous customer, but to go from previous to existing is like 2 seconds and 3 words "Sign Me Up". But I don't want to sign up until I get the deal. I would sign up but it has been a little over a year since I subscribed last so I figure I'd have to get a new card and no use getting a new card for a box I don't want.

You can find the deal on the DirecTV website under HDTV there is a spot on the left where it talked about existing customers. For me I called a CSR then asked to be transferred to a retention agent.

It looks like the News Corp acquisition/merger of Hughes has gone through. Anyone have any opinion about how this could impact D* and HDTV?

My feel is that this has been in the works for a long time and if News Corp had any plans on moving away from HDTV they wouldn't have extended of the HDTV offer.

I know Michael Freamer @ SGTH seems to think the sky will now fall.

Does anyone know if the 811's DVI connector can be converted to a VGA connection with an adapter(not converter). I think they are saying that it is DVI-D but I'm not sure and I think the DVI-D only carries the digital signal and no analog.

Today the installers came and w/ my HD setup -- and I found out that Mike515 was right. They brought a Samsung TS160 instead of the Hughes. I know I was specifically told by my DirecTV rep that I would get the Hughes, but now DirecTV is telling me that they cannot control which box you get. To make things right, they have offered to let me return the Samsung and will take away all charges on my account - so the install and OTA and dish for free. Then I can buy anther HD box and, after sending proof of purchase, DirecTV will give me $250 credit.

So, any reason why I should ditch the Samsung box?

From what I've read, yes ditch it!

This reason that I went to a local BB and bought a Hughed HTL-HD. It works great!!! The only problem I've had has been with my local NBC station, it's newscast live audio has bad lipsynch, taped news is fine. A local station problem.

I hooked up my rooftop antenna and it pulled in all of the local stations without any antenna rotation, it's been idle for 3+ years. All of the D* stations come in better than my old, D* supplied, receiver.

From what I've read on this forum, the Samy has problems for some people. The HTL-HD has all the same features as the Samy, plus it's cheaper -- $399 at Best Buy ("while the deals last").

Happy Holidays,
