Heh, 1080p is fun. But man is it processor-intensive!

Someday maybe I'll actually WATCH my projector...

Hell, by then we'll all have our personal jet-packs and a PDA will have the processing power of the Space Shuttle.

somewhere in this thread someone stated what those 4 bars related to when pushing the red button on the right side of voom motorolla box. Can I get another brief rundown on that. Last night I was going through them and left it where all 4 bars lit up when I pushed the red button. What mode is that in? It sure seems to be a slow one changing channels when i am on that option. One other thing, I think I read when we have the new update on our box we won't see the 1800 number to dial in system setup, I am still seeing that number, does that mean I have not had my Voom STB updtaed yet with the newest version?
Thanks,

Keith

Top bar flashing = 1080i, next one down = 720p then 480p then 480i. All flashing = auto select.

The fact that you notice slow channel changing indicates you don't have the latest upgrade.

For a strictly V* related forum which should answer more of your questions in addition to this great forum is satelliteguys.us.

Thanks for the answer Bill. Is there a quick answer as to why we can't change those setting when sitting in our chair using the Voom remote? I think the only way to change that output is too push the red button on the box itself...

I sure hope not:)

The Space Shuttle was built using late 1970 computer technology- As in Intel 8008 Procesors.
We have more compute power on our desks.

Better analogy would be the processing power of the DOE on our PDA. They have a 10 Teraflop supercomputer at their Lawrence Berkeley NERSC facility.

Itried to do that and they told me i had to buy everything or nothing. $15 extra for one extra box is extortion + they want a $199 activation fee for the box inspite of the fact that they have to come back and set up my ota antenna for free already. if the picture wasnt so good i would have called dish/cable already.
That is another thing that held me off going VOOM, other than the fact that they don't have any DVR options (SD or HD) yet.

I need at least three receivers, that raises VOOM cost to near $80 just to have the basic tier.

In comparison, I currently have Comcast basic plus the HD box for $17 which gives me ABC, NBC, ESPN, InHD1 and InHD2, E* 811 and 522 dual tuner DVR for $55 that gives me all local OTA HDs and ESPN, Discovery, HDNet, HDNetmovies, and able to DVR over 60 SD channels on 522 to keep the rest of the family happy, for a total of $72. I am also free to add HBO, SHO And Starz on Comcast or HBO, SHO on E* but don't see a reason to do so since my occasional DVD viewing can cover that.

Granted I will miss the exclusive VOOM channels but I also get five very good HD channels with good sports coverage that VOOM does not have. Now if VOOM rolls out an HDDVR sooner than E* or Comcast at no upfront fees, things will be different.

I was told the same thing. Lease all, or purchase all (499/199/199).

Extortion is a little strong when you consider an HD box with D* will cost you about $500 each plus the $5 mirror. So they give you the option of leasing. If they didn't, I wouldn't have bit - future a little too risky for me to sink even $199 per box. Not sure I'll have it for 20 months.

Real problem is - Voom doesn't have an SD box. I'm not willing to switch completely from D*, but if I were, No way I'd pay that rate for all the extra receivers I'd need. The $9.50 a month is fair when compared to a $500 D* HD box, but is rediculous compared to the $0 that a D* SD box costs. This is the same reason I looked only briefly into Digital Cable. To get the decent channels, I'd need to rent 6 (non-HD) cable boxes @ $9 a month - plus $1.50 a month for the remote.

I had V* install 3 receivers so I could get the wiring done at no charge. I'll return 2 after a couple of weeks. Does anyone know if I add back a 2nd receiver in a few months (when the new 34"Sony XBR comes out) - is there an activation fee, or "installation" fee, if it is already pre-wired ? They don't seem to want to send any equipment directly to the sub's home and allow self-installation, but I wonder if this would be considered different because it is a "re-activation" ?

D* HD boxes are only $249 and $299 at Circuit City. Current customers can get the box for $99 if they have been with D* for 2 or more years.

Yep, just today I got the $99 deal from D*. What a great deal it is too. I am now actually VERY happy that the Voom thing didn't work out. It was going to cost me so much more money.

The difference is:

D* => ~5 HD channels
VOOM => 20+ HD channels

I know Voom has more channels but D* actually has like 8 or 9. Hopefully more are on the way.

If you include "premium" channels, Voom has 35.

No question, if HD is not a priority, Voom is not the best service for you.

Ordered Voom today. Got the unofficial word from the sales guy the target date for ESPN is within the next 3 months. Also at the end of the summer they are coming out with a PVR.

I had to get Voom. My new Hitachi, which looks glorious at Sears (Voom feed) looks like crap on SD D*. Combination of the set up-converting signals to virtual 540p or 1080i and the massive MPEG signal compression from D*. Plus the Silver Sensor I got only picks up Fox OTA (480p) reliably. Watched the repeat of the Pro Bowl on NFL Network today and while zooms weren't bad, any far/wide shots were horrendous.

They are coming on Friday! Yippy! Had the sales guy put in the installer notes that I need a medium directional (per antennaweb.org). Saw somewhere on AVS where you can request that. But he said it was up to the installer. Plus I need the walls fished and he said it was FREE! WOW! Just paid D* $75 last week for that.

Anyway, hope the lineup improves and the PVR and ESPN rumors are real. Then I can dump D* for $150 and still own that equipment.

I am hoping the rumors of the PVR being out by the end of the summer are real, too. I have a Direct Tivo and I can't live without it. I am waiting to invest in the HD Tivo until Voom comes out with their PVR. If they still have the $10 a month rental fee, I am going to have them add a Voom dish next to my Direct dish. I am then going to drop Directv to their cheapest package and decide if I like Voom. If not, I will have them come out and remove the Voom dish. If I do like Voom, I will sell my Directv merchandise. The only downside is that I do not know how long I can resist the HDTivo. Hopefully Voom will be worth the wait.

That's my problem, I know it's the smart thing to wait, but don't know if I can. If Voom's HD PVR, and maybe even the whole-house distribution, looks good, don't know if I'll be able to resist that either. Hoping customer retention will offer a good deal on the HDTivo once Voom comes out with theirs.

I'll probably give Voom a full 12 months. If they continue on the path they are now - continually trying to improve - I'll be happily waiting for things to get better and better.

First real deal from D* on the HD-Tivo, and I'll probably get one. If Voom then comes out with one I like better, I'll sell the Tivo. If V* comes through pretty quickly, should be able to get close to what I paid back. If it takes them awhile to release or work out bugs, I'll be glad I had the Tivo in the meantime.

Only problem is the best D* deal will probably come with the firm release date announcement from V*.

According to other posts, it's down to $899 already elsewhere also. I'm waiting for a deal in the $500 range if D* ever subsidizes a promotion. If not, I'll plead my case with the customer retention dept. see what deal I can get.
