This deal looks pretty good. If I could only get the wife to okay an antenna on the house. Can anyone confirm the type of antenna Voom has installed? If it to large I may have to stick with cable until someone else offers local channels in HD without an antenna.

I wonder what the installers think when they come out to add Voom to a home with an existing competitor's equipment still active and in-place?

APorter I dont know which antenna they will bring but you could place in the attic like am and others. (HOA dont always approve antenna) or you could buy a square shooter which has been talked about in other threads in this form. Its not bad looking and is wife friendly Size 16" x 16 "

Wanman I guess they think more $$$$$$$ ....Who knows it may be the same installers D* uses .......I hope not....Most of them dont know HD means much less how it looks.....One of the first installers wanted to sell me a S cable for better picture quality on a Samsung 27" HD ready Tv last year.......Wanman did you get a refund on your Sammy 160 or did you get another unit instead?

They use the stealthtenna, which attaches directly to the dish. If you aren't allow to have this antenna, then you won't be allowed to have any. It's only a bit wider then the dish.

Go Broncos!

OK, now I'm thinking seriously about this but I want to make sure my exisitng spare RG6 wiring is sufficient. VOOM is a single LNB Dish, right? So how does it work with multiple receivers? I assume that if it uses a normal multiswitch that I need two cables from the dish to the multiswitch. Is that right?

Has anyone asked VOOM this question? It is a very good question.

The voom rep told me they install this antenna:

http://www.solidsignal.com/prod_disp...=&PROD=ANC3010

The Channel master 3010

Incidentally, their reps seem to know more about their technology and products than reps from ANY other electronics company I have spoken with over the phone....nice to deal with.

Too bad Playboy HD wont be part of the $80 package....!! :(

Yep.. that's the stealthtenna... very sleek, and works well for me(the non-powered version), but I'm in a good area for reception.

Can someone with Voom already installed please tell me which way the dish points? More specifically what the compass heading is? The Voom installer came out today and because my apt. balcony faces South, he said he could not install it. He said that my balcony needs to face East. The CSR on the phone said I should have been ok with a S. facing balcony. The installer was very polite but gave me the impression that he really didn't want to be there. I used my compass and I can mount a dish and point it as far East as 110 degrees on the compass heading. I thought I read that the Voom satellite is at 123.8. I'm in N. Texas.

If its East that would not be a good thing for me. It would mean I'd need to get creative.

Well I just got off the phone with Voom again. I was told that the Voom satellite is close to DirecTV's satellites. Since I am receiving DirecTV now there is no reason I should have been denied an install. This is according to the CSR. I have been rescheduled for March 10. Sucks that they can't move it closer since it was supposed to be installed today. He's also calling the supervisor of the installer and let him know about the situation. CSR confirmed that you do need a South facing balcony. I told CSR that I wanted to install it myself since I did my DirecTV install as well as a friend's and some family members. He said that it's not allowed.

Thanks for the antenna info. Looks like I need to figure out how to run the cable from the attic to the basement.

ram1220,

VOOM's satellite is at a 61.5 location. Their dish will point about 63 degrees EAST of a DirecTV dish. It is located on the same satellite that carries the CBS-HD feed from Dish.

You will enjoy VOOM's service and PQ immensely! Welcome aboard!!

Regards,

Rick

Hmm, if I remember corerectly my D* dish is pointing S-SW. This would make it E-SE for Voom. I would have a problem, I think.

Sometimes I wonder if Voom was planning more to focus on the Atlantic than North America.

Well it's not so much planning..just how it shook down. Not like a new DBS service can just pick and choose the orbital slot it'd like to use.

Using your lon/lat readings (if 84/34 is still correct) it looks like your D* 3 lnb dish would be aimed at about 220 on a compass. For comparisons sake 61.5 would be at about 145.... if you have a compass handy and want to get a preliminary feel.

75º is close enough to a right-angle to eyeball it. Still, it presents a challenge requiring a creative solution. Besides, how many of the installers that have been encountered have been willing to raise a 25-30' ladder to mount a dish on the side of a house?

I just got this offer via E-mail as well. This is exactly what I was waiting for before I went back to the small dish (when we bought our new house we initally got cable).

That inital $750 was steep... but for ~$20 a month for two boxes I can rent them and the barrier to entry for 20+ HDTV channels becomes NIL. Especially, compared to the two channels I get OTA now via my HTPC. Plus I can now sell the HDTV PC card on Ebay now and make an extra buck.

Whee!

I do feel sorry for the early adopters though... but I'm usually one of them, so mark me one up this time.
