As of today, DirecTV has HBO HD, Showtime HD, and HDNet Movies on the same transponder (C-10). It appears they are still sharing the same bandwidth as 2 channels did on a transponder, roughly 28mb/s.

I'll continue to monitor bitrates at http://www.widemovies.com/dfwbitrate.html

I took a quick sample and got the following...

HBO HD 13.9mb/s
Showtime HD 6.5mb/s (lowest I've ever recorded)
HDNet Movies 7.8mb/s (lowest for HDNet Movies I've ever recorded)

These were 5 minute samples, so I'll definitely need to collect more data, but it appears they are giving HBO more bandwidth than the other two.

Let the bit starving begin!

Is this to make room for the Sunday Ticket HD broadcasts do you think?

What a freakin' joke... At what point do they think HD is no longer HD once you compress it to more than 1/3 of it's intended bit-rate?!?

Who's got Stephanie Campbell's phone number? If this is true and not just a temporary thing as they are moving channels around, I am through (after 10 years). Totally ridiculous...

I can't believe that Mark Cuban is ok with this. I hope that this is just a tempory test and the bit rates will go back up. I'm not home now, but when I get home tonight I'll check out the picture and the bit rates using the Tivo. I guess that DirecTV really doesn't have enought bandwidth to carry the Sunday Ticket channels and add the networks without severly compromising the picture quality.

Doesn't look good to me. I just took a longer sample of HDNet Movies and got 6.7mb/s.

Darn. This means that Showtime-HD is using less bandwidth (6.5Mbps) than a standard 480p DVD! That's the bandwidth that SD channels should be at!

The other night I used the Tivo to check the resolution, and DirecTV had reduced the resolution on HBO and HD-Net to 1280 by 1088. Showtime and Discovery were still 1920 by 1088 at the time. Since I'm not home now, can someone tell if they've reduced the resolution for all of the HD channels now. I guess DirecTV is offering HD-lite at this point---Not a good selling point for them.

I'll be interested in seeing what the numbers average out to as you get longer samples from all three channels. Unfortunately, you can no longer compare the entire transponder at one time, since you only have two tuners. Now I wonder if those previous numbers were low (not taking up the entire transponder) because they were seeing how low they could go, and if we'd notice.

I'm anxious to get home to see how it looks to me. I'm on a smaller set (46" from 11') than some of you, so I'm not going to be the most discriminating viewer. Can you notice any difference? If nothing else, maybe this leads credence to the rumors of much more HD by the end of the year?

My dual Rythmik Servo sub project (actually quad now, need to update page)
HDM format neutral thanks to the pricing wars of the '07 xmas shopping season :)

By this evening I will have had a chance to grab some entire movies which will give me a better indication (I just did a longer segment of Showtime and got 8.4mb/s). Things are definitely lower, and still appear to add up to about 28mb/s per transponder.

I'll see about checking the resolutions. I already knew HBO was 1280x1088.

You got it. HBO HD, ShowtimeHD, and HDNet Movies are all at 1280x1088 now.

(For those who wonder, it is supposed to be 1920x1088). Why 1088 and not 1080? Because 1088 is a multiple of 32 (or 64) I forget which matters, but MPEG encoder/decoders care about such things.

FWIW, he isn't. Email him personally: mark@hd.net. I emailed Dish last week about HDNET going to hell and they turned it around in 1 day and Cuban was involved directly. You bet your ass he cares, so send him an email now.

You really think the new birds could accomplish the numbers they were stating w/o having to do stuff like this?

I hope its temporary too but if they plan on getting the channels they were stating, even with state of the art birds I would think theyd have to go to atleast 3 per transponder.

I've heard from Mark. It does concern him. They think it is temporary due to NFL games and expect the bitrates to come back up when the games are over.

No offense Darin, but are you serious? Seeing how low they could go before we'd notice? That would have been just about 14 months ago now. FWIW, I watch all my HD on a 36" 4x3 set at just about 7.5' and HBO-HD and HDNet have looked like sh*t ever since they added the HD pack. The recently added Bravo HD has looked like total crap on the US Open. Now this? Like I said, if it's not just a temporary thing as they move channel slots about I'm finished. And people wonder why I question whether they will use their just announced capacity increase in '05-07 to restore PQ? Answer me one question. Has D* EVER restored any PQ once it was reduced?

Where in the world did you guys think that the bandwidth for 9 NFL:ST HDTV games was going to come from?

Going to sign up for Dish Network? PM me for a ClubDish referral number that will give you a $50 credit on your first bill.

Honestly, I thought it was coming from turning off PPV. I'm not a football fan... how many, if any, of those HD games are on simultaneously?

This seemed to have started 2 nights ago. I noticed it while checking resolutions using my HDTiVo.

http://www.avsforum.com/avs-vb/showt...hreadid=443956

I just hope that sundays football doesnt look like crap. I expect some technical issues with fox's first major HD broadcasts. With a house full of people here on sunday and some of them thinking of jumping ship to D* I hope all is well....

I noticed a decrease in picture quality myself the other night but had no idea they were trying to pull crap like this.

Now does anyone agree that the FCC needs to define a minimum bitrate under mpeg2 for something to be labeled "HD" ? Or are all of you still going to say that govt intervention can only be bad?
