there's another rumor bouncing around that says HD DVR's are free come august with a commitment. (which presonally i think is a little bold of a prediction...)

I'll suck up a 2 year agreement for a free HD DVR.

up until this point Directv seems to never really beat on people with their commitments. THere are tons of story's of people telling them they are moving and cant get a signal and D* waving the fee. But mostly at least until now- they would prorate the fee so if you were disgusted with them after 5 or 6 months bailing wasnt so painful as paying the full $150 fee.

I guess we'll see if things are a changing....

They are revising the cancallation fee according to the fax. I suspect it will double.

Two years is a very long time. I'm still in a 2yr commitment for a 510 DVR from Dish from back in Nov of 2003. I'd like to retire the box, but its required for another half year.

Going to sign up for Dish Network? PM me for a ClubDish referral number that will give you a $50 credit on your first bill.

Of course the lead sentence in Scott's posting was that he had heard from two sources that DirecTV was planning on making the new MPEG4 HD DVR free to all subs with that two-year committment.

Lets discuss what he has on paper. The Fax which are the only facts. The rest is propoganda and conjecture until its in writing.

Hence why the title of the thread is only about the 2 year commitment. Thats in writing on the fax. The june 15 announcement threads were bad enough.

This thread title is mis-leading as the 2 year commitment is tied with something else, obviously.

I don't believe for 1 second this guy(vurbano) even has D*. I wouldn't even stay with a woman that I bitched about that much!

I also would have no problem with a 2 year commitment for a free HD DVR. I'm one of those "locked in because of Sunday Ticket guys" so I'm not going anywhere. (and I didn't say that to start anything about the ST price increase....)

If this is true (I'm still seeing the word "rumor" here) then I wouldn't personally have a problem with it - my cell phone company made me sign a 2 year commitment and all I got was a discount on a crappy phone (they didn't even give it to me for free!). An HD DVR would be much more valuable than a crappy cellphone

If I read Scott's fax correctly, the 2 yr commit was only for purchases. If certain individuals don't like the 2yr commit for free or highly subsidized purchases of hd and/or DVR equipment, hasn't the leadership of D* made references to leasing options? Would that not take care of those that don't like to commit?

go to Scotts website and read the fax. All dealers have to sell a 2 year commitment with all new advanced technology items. HD recievers, HD DVRs etc. And yes I have D*. And no I dont care what you think.

I would sign up for a 10 year commitment to get a $500-$1000 piece of equipment free if the cancellation fee was only $300 and the other terms were good.

It appears that this is getting a bit off-the-topic. If you read the fax and the first post, it says nothing about free equipment. What it says is, in my view, most concerning. It says that PURCHASES of advanced equipment require a 2 year agreement. So I pay full price for an HD-DVR and and have to agree to service for 2 years? I don't think that's in our best interest. I guess they could say we're paying say, $800 for a $1600 device so that's why we need to agree to the terms but that's a big bogus if it's accurate.

What's the big deal?

I spent $700 on my SAT-HD300 and another $1000 on my HD-TiVo. I'm not planning on going anywhere for a while...

Don't you wish there were a knob on the TV to turn up the intelligence? There's one marked "Brightness," but it don't work.

To compete with cable, they will have to come up with some type of "free" HD DVR scheme, and a two-year contract seems a logical trade off. I doubt you will get to own the equipment though, it may just be a lease deal similar to E* and cable. Otherwise like you said who would mind paying a $300 early cancellation fee if he can keep the $1,000 equipment.

If this turns out the way I hoped for, I will seriously look at D* again.

It also says,"Directv is planning agressive offers for the third quarter of 2005". I don't know whether that means free or highly subsidized, but I don't believe that it means full price or something rediculous.

Let's consider the facts. Directv has and will be devoting hundreds of millions of dollars to build and launch satellites specifically for high definition programming. They need subs watching programming from these sats to make money. For this to occur, they must be competitive with other providers concerning set top box costs, content, and quality. D* has openly stated that they have not been agressive with HD and they plan to in the future.

So, considering those facts, do your really think D* is going to require a 2-yr commit and some rediculous price for an HD and/or DVR box? It doesn't seem likely to me.
