From what I gather, the 4600A is nearly identical to the 4200A with the exception that it's the industrial model (for hotels and such). Because the 4200A's are so hard to find, I'm considering trying the 4600A to test my luck. If you have had hands on experience with a 4600A, can you reply with your thoughts on it? Is it harder to use? Is it the same hardware? I just want to make certain that this thing will work well out of the box. I know it doesn't look very attractive- I don't care very much about that.

Thanks for your time and feedback!

I'm curious about this myself. I was watching an eBay auction for a 4600A yesterday, and thinking about pulling the trigger.

From what I've read the major problem is setup. The 4600A apparently has no front panel controls and is dependent upon either a remote control or a serial port connection for both setup and control. And it doesn't come with a remote control. So, you would be dependent upon finding an appropriate remote or relying on the completeness of the Harmony database (if you have a Harmony remote).

I just got one off ebay

I don't have a Harmony but the owners manual from LG's website shows a generic RC. I tried a Radio Shack universal remote but no luck.

Anyone have one of these with success in controlling it?

Here's how I got mine to work:
1. Ebay: LG LST 4600A (cheaper than 4200A). Make sure you get
the IR receiver for the 4600A with it. It is a little gadget on a wire which plugs into the box.

2. Ebay: One-for-all Kameleon universal remote (cheap, discontinued)
Also download their low-res .pdf manual at the One-for-all web site.

3. One-for-All's customer service dept. was great!
The "Magic Remote Code" is either 1414 or 1415. (not what has been mentioned
This gets most of the box's buttons and access to setup.

As has been mentioned, there is no on/off switch on the receiver.
You can have the Universal remote learn the off button for your TV, etc.

The LST 4600A is cheap right now, good quality, looks good, works well. A happy Deal.

Great box especially for the price. I use a "one for all" URC6131 remote to control mine. There is a thread elsewhere here with step-by-step instructions.

chuckroast gives some good tips too.
