need a dummies explanation of porch, sync, width for resolution settings - AVS Forum

I'm new to setting up custom resolutions from scratch using tools like powerstrip. I underatdn the horizontal and vertical active figures, the vertical scan rate, interelaced vs progressive, and the total dot clock. But I have no idea what back porch, front porch and sync width are for.

Can someone please explain these in laymens terms.

As I remember, some video generators also included "serrations", which were auxiliary sync pulses within a line.
