I'm looking to upgrade my HTPC with a ATI 4850 video card but one I found at a cheap price only stated "Built-in HDMI with Multi-channel 5.1 surround audio" and not 7.1 (I assume both are PCM) which I would feed to my Onkyo TX-NR905 that has all the new decoding capibilities. Am I misinterpeting something or confusing something? I would have thought if the diamond 4850 does any audio over HDMI then it would just pass the raw PCM stream whether it be 5.1 encoded or 7.1??? Wasn't that the upgrade from the 37XX cards?

Here is the card http://www.diamondmm.com/4850PE3512V.php

Every HD 4850 cards supports 2/4/5.1/7.1 LPCM and DD/DTS bitstreams over HDMI.

I thought so but it makes this complicated area worse when they state 5.1 in there literature.

Stating 5.1 support does not preclude 7.1 support.

From time to time, the Gene Pool could use a little chlorine ...
