Well I got my USB-UIRT and got it installed and working with EventGhost. After being slightly mystified by EventGhost, I finally found out how to use it to transmit IR codes to my learning remote. What's cool is that you can paste the Pronto hex right into the window and transmit immediately. Then you can save that set of codes and give it a custom name. You can also teach codes to EventGhost and save them.
I was able to program my URC MX-500 with discrete on/off codes for my projector, receiver, Blu-ray, and HD-DVD. Now I am off to the races setting up crash-proof macros. Thanks AVS Forum!
