So, I haven't seen a thread outlining the best recommended codecs for Windows 7 yet. I know a few people here use W7 Beta and I was just curious. I've been running into some issues recently and was curious as to what the best setup would be. I currently use W7 MC with Media Browser for my playback and PDVD 8 (with HD-DVD tweak) (build 2217 I think?) for BR and HD-DVD playback of my ripped .iso's. I've been trying to do conversions to .mkv's but my success has been hit or miss however. I just want to have everything lined up with the RC of W7 is released as well when it finally goes gold.

Just one more step: see hack7mc.com

Playing MKVs in Media Center
or MKVs for Minimalists on Windows 7

By the way this site has some great tips on Win7

I installed the base W7 codecs and the x64 W7 codecs and all my MKVs play perfectly from 7MC.

Build 7048 is a huge improvement on my system. I can't wait for this to go primetime so I can ditch Vista.

There is a known issue with MKV's in the current releases that will be fixed in subsequent releases.

Open the Audio decoder cofiguration shortcut and set AC3 to disabled.

I have installed Shark007 would that conflict with anything if I downloaded CoreAVC as well?

I've downloaded MPC but am I right in that there is no install for it, just a player?

I think I just installed the same ones I used on XP for blu-ray playback. mpc video decoder, ffdshow and haali's splitter. This is on the x86 version. I don't like codec packs because they always install a bunch of stuff that one doesn't need.

Gabest 64 splitter and ffdshow tryout 64 and some reg hack to get MC to see .mkvs.

However I have a problem getting my DVDs to play with DTS sound, but no problem with Dolby. Can't find anything on the betaforums or on the net on this problem. As I understand DVD playback are handled by windows own codecs...

With the hack7mc stuff and shark007 codec pack I'm up and running like a charm. See the thread on DXVA in Vista for a little help with .mkv playback.
