AMD 785G Chipset

AMD 785G chipset (codenamed RS880), released on August 4, 2009, is the successor to AMD 780G chipset that has been used widely since its release on March 2008. The main difference is a new IGP called Radeon HD 4200 (codenamed RV620, clocked at 500MHz, but the number of stream processors is 40, the same as HD 3200, RV610). Southbridge is SB710, a minor revision of SB700. Improvements over 780G are:

Integrated Graphics HD 4200
  • DirectX 10.1 support
  • 2nd generation Unified Video Decoder (UVD 2)
    • Full hardware decode acceleration of H.264/VC-1/MPEG-2 (full hardware decode acceleration of MPEG-2 is not supported in HD 3200?)
    • Hardware decode acceleration of a secondary video stream (Picture-in-Picture) (10-20% CPU usage decrease)
  • Improved ATI Avivo Video Post Processor
    • Enhanced DVD up-conversion to HD
    • Automatic dynamic contrast adjustment
  • Multichannel LPCM over HDMI (no PAP, no HD audio bitstreaming, of course). Update: Only stereo LPCM in addition to DD/DTS bitstreaming is supported over HDMI
Southbridge SB710
  • ACC (Advanced Clock Calibration) support

AMD 785G Chipset Reviews
Well if you are interested only in the video playback aspect of HD 4200, perhaps most of them are not worth reading. The articles that contain (meaningful, IMO) video playback performance tests are:
That's it! The other articles neglected this aspect, as expected usually.

GIGABYTE 785G Chipset Motherboards

Here are brief descrptions of the available models and their differences.

MicroATX, DDR2 SDRAM
MicroATX, DDR3 SDRAM
  • GA-MA785GMT-UD2H

Supports DDR3-SDRAM (letter T), all solid capacitors (letter D).

    - Newegg, $90
    - PROVANTAGE, $90

  • GA-MA785GPMT-UD2H

Supports DDR3-SDRAM (letter T), SidePort memory (letter P), all solid capacitors (letter D).
ATX
Chipset Drivers

Basically the drivers are common to all the above models.

AMD Chipset Roadmap

VR-Zone - AMD 800 Series Chipsets Launch Schedule (September 4, 2009)

Quote:

VR-Zone has put together a roadmap of the AMD 800 series chipsets line-up slated for release in Q2 next year. AMD 890FX/GX + SB850, part of the "Leo" platform for enthusiasts is slated for launch in April 2010 replacing the current AMD 790FX/GX + SB750 chipset. AMD 880G + SB810, part of the "Dorado" mainstream platform will come along in May 2010 replacing the current AMD 785G + SB710 chipset. AMD 880G comes with enhanced IGP graphics performance which we presume is DX11 capable and sports the next generation ATI Hybrid graphics technology. Overall, the AMD 880G board could be priced cheaper due to the integrated clock generator and integrated Broadcom MAC.

Hopefully AMD will fix the HDMI audio issue with the AMD 880G chipset.

You linked to the ATX board the UD3H , the micro-ATX is here http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16813128394 which is the US2H. Looks like a killer board, hopefully an ITX will be made with the 785G chipset.

Looks like the mATX board that is currently available is the one without sideport memory. Would this be a real issue for an HTPC that wouldn't be doing any gaming?

Just a warning here, the drivers on the CD (the only ones that work unless you have the 9.8 betas from AMD engineering) are going to cause a lot of frustration.

Will the 785 provide more help in playing Blu-Ray advanced audio? Will any other upcoming hardware help?

You know, it's been a while since I built a computer... I think it's about that time.

Your order might have been canceled anyways. Looks like the pulled it from sale (link comes up as deactivated) for whatever reasons (not allowed to sell it yet?)

Well, after many months of following these excellent HTPC forums on AVS I was ready to finally make my motherboard purchase so when I saw the GIGABYTE GA-MA785GM-US2H pop up on Newegg yesterday I put an order in straight away. I thought is was strange that Gigabyte did not yet have a support page activated. Then I saw this forum and the fact than Newegg has now "deactivated" the board.

Interesting thing is I got a FedEx tracking number this afternoon so it appears that their warehouse did not get the word to hold the shipments. I have asked the Newegg support folks what they suggest I do but I plan to at least give it a try when it arrives to see how it goes. It may be more trouble than it is worth but what the heck.

I'll post my results if anyone is interested. Maybe I should send the board to renethx to let him give it a proper evaluation (this is my 1st HTPC build).

Mine would have cleared for shipment too if I had not had canceled it. The Driver problems he warned about here scared me off though.

I did receive the GA-MA785GM-US2H board today from Newegg and the good news is that it is running fine with an Athlon II X2 250 Regor under Win 7RC. Electrically/mechanically I am pleased with the board. However, as Bingo13 warned, I have virtually no support for the new chipset features from AMD or Gigabyte. The CD packaged with the board does not support the 785G.

I spent a few minutes searching for a Beta version of the AMD/ATI drivers just to push the experiment a bit further but no luck. Any pointers to a Beta driver package would be appreciated.

I know it is a bit of a gamble, but I will order one as soon as it becomes available on newegg. The driver issues should be resolved over time, and as long as it makes a stable file server, I am ok with that. pickren's report sounds good to me.

Has AMD released any info on that? They only the old stuff on there.
Also, the 785 has the HD4200 IGP. Regardless of the naming, if it is a HD4XXX series chip then isn't it a different architecture than the above mentioned cards? And if so will Hybrid CF work with the older cards?
Could you clarify please.
Thanks.
