Okay. Burned in seems more appropriate.

Looking at the list it seemed to me that burned in and hardcoded were being used synonymously. If that is not the case then what are hard coded subtitles?

Yeah, I think they mean the same. We all just make up the words as we go along

"Burned in" is the usage in Handbrake, one of the more popular encoding tools. Hard coded is an alternate, but much less-used, term.

"Soft subs" are those that are NOT burned in permanently (part of the video itself), and can thus be turned on and off in software (or in your DVD player).

This list is a great resource, please keep up the good work!

One to add is Captain America (US). Has line 24-28 of the first english track as forced. It is the section where the red skull finds the cosmic cube, the assistant is talking to the priest. Very pointless as to why they did this as the Germans talk to each other in English and there is nothing key to this dialog but so it goes. Note it is not fully in the 2:35 frame so you may want to reposition.

I wish the use of industry standard terms would be more widespread.

Using multiple names to describe the same thing really confuses us newbies and frankly it's a frustrating waste of time to be trying to research the differences between what is actually the same thing.

First, they are hardcoded with the video and I'm not sure that I've ever seen hardcoded subs outside the video image.

Second, I watched this on a 2.35 screen and there were no issues with the subs.

What's the deal with forced subtitles on the extended editions of the Lord of the Rings blu-rays? I looked at the spreadsheet in the first post, only the UK EE are listed. It says "Separate". If there are forced subs, are they in the video image (scope friendly)?

On the US version there are no forced subs, they are burned in. Guessing by the spreadsheet this is different for the UK version

Damian

Thanks for the info. I'm not looking at it now, but I think the spreadsheet says "separate". Shouldn't it say hard coded?

For the UK Version of the extended it shows separate. For the US version (although it doesn't appear to be the extended version) it shows hardcoded. I don't know about the UK version, only that the US version is hardcoded

If anyone would like to assist me in adding to this database, let me know.

You sir, are a saint. I'm testing forced subtitle support with BD-ISO rips for my company's product and just wasted the last day ripping Blu-rays with hard coded subtitles. This list right here will save me many hours of frustration trying to find movies that have them. Thanks!

I have been having issues with Forced subs also after i ripped 98% of my blurays to mkv using makemkv thinking i didnt have to worry about subs.

In any case, is the general consensus that Media Center does not show forced subs or subs for mkv because i have not been able to get them to show up? I also have MyMovies and PDVD 9/11 if that matters.

How do you know about "Tinker Taylor Soldier Down"? It doesn't release on Blu-ray for another month.

You know the answer to this already. And even if it wasn't, it's not that unusual for a movie to be available to distributors, retailers, large blue video rental chains, etc early.

Not all versions of this have forced subs...some versions have the subs burned in. It depends which version you get.

That's good news! I see that there are two releases on blu-ray.com so I guess one has the burned in subs and the other doesn't?

Does anybody know what track(s) the forced subs are on the disc with forced subs (and know which release it is)? It would be nice to keep the spreadsheet on the first post up to date.

I may order this disc from amazon.uk and rip it to find out which track it is but that may take some time.

I have it and watched it, they had to be burned in because I didn't rip a sub track with it. I have the HMV exclusive SB version FWIW.

Damian's guide on opening with BD Clown and viewing/reading them in BDSup2Sub is the way to find out for sure.

I understand how to use BDSup2Sub but as there is no subtitle track in the M2TS I watched last week, which played perfectly, they have to be burned into the video.
