Previewing Wolverine in DVDFab's player it appears English 1 is the foreign language subs (probably forced though DVDFab doesn't show that info) and English 2 is normal closed captions.

Does anyone know why Clown_BD might be giving me two .sup files that are seemingly identical? For example, the Return of the Jedi BD gives me Subtitles_39_English.sup and Subtitles_39_English_FORCED.sup, but both appear to identical when I run them in BDSup2Sub.

After ClownBD demuxes, it runs BDSup2Sub on every sup file and if any forced subs are found, extracts a new sup with only the forced subs.

In this case, that track has every single subtitle marked as forced.

Captain Phillips (US) has subtitles flagged as forced in the main sub track. MakeMKV found them with no issue.

Yep -- looks like the 7th track.

Crash and Hellboy 2 both have forced subtitles. Don't know if they are flagged or hardcoded. Ironman has forced subtitles that don't get pulled when you rip using DVDFab (full paid version).

Older movie, Seven Pounds, has forced subs (not hardcoded). Also not scope friendly.

And that is why I move all my subs into 2.45:1 frame. Worth the extra time spent.

Youth in Revolt (US) has properly flagged forced subs. MakeMKV found with no issue.

The notes for the subs in "John Carter" on the spreadsheet are not completely descriptive. The notes say "Track 4615 contains the 61 forced subtitles", but the subs actually do not have the forced flag set and are on their own subtitle track. They are scope friendly.

I know this subject has been beat to death and I've looked through most of the threads and they all seem to give me an information overload. I look that the spreadsheet here and I don't quite understand how I'm supposed to use this information. A little background, I use MakeMKV to rip my Blu-Ray collection. I have DirectVobSub installed in all my htpcs which I guess is supposed to detect flagged subtitles and show them. So two questions really, how do I use the information provided to know what track to select in MakeMKV and once I select the right track, how do I make sure I have it flagged correctly? There is a lot of information here, but I'm just not sure how I translate it to using MakeMKV.

Sorry Jobber can't help you there. I re-encode the forced subtitles into my video files for easier use with Tivo/Air Video HD/VLC. My process isn't the best I bet but it works for me ;-)

I've figured out a process to get them to work. The hard part is now figuring out which titles need the forced subtitles. The 2 spreadsheets are helpful, but very incomplete. I have an extremely large movie collection that I am slowly working through transferring to my server and don't have the time to check 3,000 titles as I go along. So, I think what I'm going to do from now on is copy all english subs and then flag them as off as default unless they are on the list. That way, if I run across one that isn't on the list, I have the subs there already and can work the process to activate the correct file without having to completely re-rip the file.

What country? I didn't find any on the US BD.

Canada. They come up when he's in his cell covering for Stallone while he's is out on the boat. I think about mid way through the movie.

If you could find the exact time code, I'd like to check my rip. I just double-checked the original disc and could not find any forced subs.

Sorry. It was a rental DVD and has been returned. I just wanted to alert the forum members to be aware that there were forced subs in the movie. I'm sure someone out there can be give you the time codes or check one of the subtitle sites.

Starts at 52:50 -- however in the US version they were hard coded into the video stream already....

Forgive me guys I am newbie but for example Pacific rim that has hard coded subs (us) it means that any other bluray around the world will be with hard coded subs?

No. It's pretty common that the European version(s) of the Blu-ray will use forced subs. If you look at this forced subs spreadsheet you will see several movies with embedded subs on the US versions but forced subs on the UK versions. Mission: Impossible, Bourne series, and LOTR for example.

You should always just select all forced subtitles in MakeMKV. It will remove any that aren't flagged as forced so you don't get extra subtitle tracks you don't want. Of course not all are marked as forced but I didn't get the subtitles for this title by selecting 'forced'.
ScottJ's Avatar ScottJ 08:14 PM 02-25-2014
The Fifth Estate (US BD) has a separate track that needs to be forced. It's the second English track. They are not marked as forced, so ClownBD won't find them.
curtisb's Avatar curtisb 11:13 PM 02-25-2014
Thor - The Dark World has a subtitle track that is stand alone like Avatar. It doesn't have a forced flag (or not according to MakeMKV).

In MakeMKV it is 'Sub 3'. (sub one is full standard English sub, sub 2 is commentary, sub 3 is just what should be forced). You'll have to check the sub and then change it to forced (I do it after using mkvpropedit though I think MakeMKV may have a way to do it as well). Also make sure you are selecting 810.mpls (the first title listed) and not the second one (I believe it is 800.mpls) as that one is incorrect (some chapter issues and you'll get some weird audio at the very start saying something like 'left rear channel.. right rear channel'.)

*edit. just noticed this is on spreadsheet for the UK version already. I've added that the same applies for the US.
