Check the thread. It's been thoroughly discussed. But basically, bandwidth of the HDMI-in of the HTS is not enough for 6 or 8-LPCM (only 2-LPCM).

Again, please check the thread for more info. The problem is the bandwidth limitation of the HDMI links of the HTS (it's typical of these devices). Just make sure that the audio stream is in DD or DTS format and multichannel will work.

The DTS or DD audio stream should be either passed through or encoded in the HTPC. There's a hack for live encoding on Realtek audio devices (I've posted links in the thread). But if you're only watching movies make sure to select a DD or DTS audio track and set the video player to passthrough (NOT decode it).

No, you'll never get more than 2-LPCM either through the TV or connecting to the Home Theater System. BANDWIDTH is the problem! The connection is exactly equivalent to S/PDIF.

Hi Tulli,

I can't seem to get my HTPC to output 5.1 even after an EDID override.
Here is my setup:
Toshiba Satellite --> HDMI --> Vizio sv320xvt --> SPDIF --> Denon AVR 3300
The Denon is old (1999) and doesn't have HDMI input
The toshiba has Windows 8 and a NVIDEA geforce GPU that the audio is going through.

I realize that SPDIF has bandwidth limitations, but I would like to pass AC-3 5.1 to the Denon, which SPDIF should have the capability to do. I used moninfo to capture the live EDID information and create an INF file. There was only 1 SAD for AC-3 2-channel Left and Right, so I changed that to AC-3 6-channel Front Left/Right, Center, Rear Left/Right, LFE, and I updated the checksum. The problem is after installing the driver, it looks like only the first 128 bytes are stored in the registry, and it is getting the second 128 bytes (which contain the SAD) from the EEPROM. I attached both the original EDID capture and the modified version that I made.

Is there anything I can do? Please help.

Perhaps it's a parsing problem due to the modded SAD having just the AC3 descriptor. Try the attached mod.

I'm not sure that makes sense, because the original only had the single AC3 descriptor. I'll give it a try when I get home. Thanks for the help

OK, I took the single AC3 descriptor as your mod. Anyway, the problem is therefore not EDID related. Is the application (which?) sending an AC3 (undecoded to PCM) stream? That's all that needs to be done. If the application is a game a live-encoding to AC3 is required. Has been discussed a lot in the thread.

So, it doesn't look like your mod worked either. See my screen shot. The windows 8 speaker configuration doesn't allow for anything other than stereo output. You can also see the registry info through moninfo doesn't have the second half of the EDID. I am playing an test AVI with AC-3 5.1 using xbmc (kodi) set to output 5.1, and it is getting down muxed.

Should work. If that's an x64 version you need to disable signature enforcement before installing.
