Does anyone have any experience building a HD HTPC in an XBox case? I have this thing ripped apart, and I'm looking at a decent amount of space in an easily accessible case. However, the back panel is going to need some modifying, and I don't think it'll accept the old ATX board I have here. Might have to pick up a Micro ATX mobo. Also, without having everything in front of me, I'm not sure if a low profile video card will fit.

Any suggestions?

I would think you would need to go with an ITX mobo to make if wok. If itsd possible. Maybe one with the ION graphics so you wouldn't need a card. Just a thought, sounds cool though.

You'll definitely need an ITX mobo, and a LOT of time to invest in properly modding the case. I saw a video, I think through Tom's Harware, a couple months back of some guy who did exactly this and it came out great. I was looking into doing it as well until my coworker who was going to give me his old xbox decided to throw it away instead

Here's a build thread from the Tom's Hardware forums; not what I had referred to above, but still quite detailed and with pics: http://www.tomshardware.com/forum/26...xbox-orig-case

That was VERY impressive and entertaining to watch... though I must say I had to mute the audio for most of it.

Yeah, this looks like it'd be a gigantic PITA. I took one apart this morning just to look around a bit. Could be fun, but I'd have to scrap the (attractive) idea of piecing one together from sale items and parts I have lying around.

That's exactly the one I was thinking of! Good find!

i would think and old receiver would make a nicer case. i have always wanted to try a case mod. maybe with the next htpc .

I've also considered an old VCR or DVD player. Something you could pick up on the cheap.

I did not use an Xbox 360 but had great success with a Sony BDP-S1 bluray player using an itx motherboard. Works great and is very stealthy

That was sick! Beautiful build! I wish I had all those tools to be able to do something like that.

That was pretty crazy. I have to wonder what percentage of the actual case still remained at the end of that build.

Not quite as impressive as this though:

Well, I'm trying out a factory modified Silverstone LC02 case. (The modifications basically meant, they drilled holes everywhere in the chassis for airflow and heat dissipation). The LC02 IS about the size of a DVD player/Receiver. It's 15"x11.6"x3.63" And has all the right mountings for a regular motherboard (even takes ATX!).

Here's my build "in progress".

I have their PC-71 server case and I have been modding it for the last 4 years. I hope I can get it done this year.

gmanhdtv that Sony BDP-S1 is a great looking htpc..

Does anyone now of a list of drives in BluRay STB.
I tore my samsung apart but it doesn't have a normal pc connection on the drive.. It be great to kill 2 birds with one stone and get a drive and case at the same time via a STB
