Wow, that's not good as I'll be using it in my theater. What other options are there for a Win7 machine?

Only Netflix in WMC and Win 7 in general is 720p. Solution is to not use a PC for that. All other streaming devices will work fine. I use a Roku.

Fantastic
Maybe I'll have to get fancy and figure out a way to control a FireStick through IRule via CEC...ughhh

What about Amazon Prime Video? What are the best methods to watching that in 1080P?

I have found that the Amazon Fire TV (or Fire TV Stick if your wifi is fast) is a great way to watch Amazon Prime, Netflix, and to stream from my server using Plex. I've even sideloaded XBMC and have access to live TV (don't try on the stick) and other XBMC things. But, I'm finding I'm using XBMC less and less because Plex is satisfying our needs more and more. You just missed the Fire TV being $79 (it's back up to $99) and I got my stick for $19 (they are $39 and out of stock now), but they are fantastic devices. I feel like I'm starting to sound like an ad for these things I talk about them so much.

WMC Netflix is absolutely horrible. It has bad quality and it stutters.

+1

But I use the Fire Stick for travel only, mainly because is it hard to integrate into a universal remote system other than Harmony and is still missing some apps I use a lot, like HBO Go. I use Roku at home, and it works fine with my universal remotes. Both do Amazon and other streaming apps very well. PCs suck at all streaming (except BBC iPlayer). Even though some Win 8 apps offer improved picture quality, they're impossible to fully control with a remote or keyboard.

The stick I doubt we will ever get any universal remote for, except maybe with the Harmony Hub. IIRC, the Harmony Hub adds bluetooth support to the Harmony Ultimate One, and I also believe the Amazon Fire TV and Fire TV Sticks use bluetooth. I can tell you there's no way to control them with the Harmony Ultimate One, Harmony One, or 700 without the hub.

With the Fire TV, I believe there's a dongle you can add to it for support.

I say believe, because I have not tested it yet. I do like the Amazon remote, but since it's not universal, I must use 2 remotes, which we aren't too fond of.

I had also heard you can use a Windows Media Center IR receiver, but I wasn't able to get it to work on my Fire TV.

Just ordered a Flirc, I totally don't need it, but the price went even lower to $14

I'm sure I'll find some use for it.

I just put it in my cart as well, I'm going to get it here. I also asked on Amazon to see if it works. Like you, I have plenty of other toys I can use it for if it doesn't work on the Fire TV. (NOTE: this will NOT work on the Fire TV Stick, as it has no USB port. )

If the Fire TV would support external media through USB, it would be killer for my RV, I could just connect a USB hard drive and use XBMC to view everything, or Plex if it supported connecting to external media. For now, I have a USB drive connected to a router with a USB port, then XBMC (sideloaded into Fire TV) pointed to that media. It works.

Sweet. The last time I looked at FLIRC, the receiver was about $30 and the size of a toaster. I may just have to pick up one of these myself.

Wait! The FireTV has a Plex App?! So I can watch streaming stuff (like Netflix, Hulu, Amazon Prime) as well as all my home media with Plex on it?! Is it better than a Roku?

FireTV absolutely has Plex.

I personally have never used a Roku, so I can't compare those for you. I use Amazon Prime Videos, and I like some of the options available for the Fire TV, but I have to admit what got me to jump was the $19 release price to Prime members. Once I got hold of the Stick, I liked it so much that I got a regular FireTV while it was $79.

You can sideload apps too, XBMC was a piece of cake to load. But like I said above, I find myself using Plex more and more and XMBC less and less.

Nice, thanks!

I wish I wasn't still watching and recording Live TV. This keeps me handcuffed to WMC and my HTPC, as I haven't found anything that can do Live TV and recordings.
