With a $199 MSRP and 150W TDP, the 768MB GTX 460 is also the first card to be of a suitable design for HTPC use. Although we don’t expect very many GTX 460s to be used for that (rather it would be for the unannounced GF106) NVIDIA is already putting plans in to motion for HTPC cards. The GTX 460 will offer full bitstreaming audio capabilities, something the GF100 GPU powering the other GTX 400 series cards could not do. This means that the GTX 460 will be able to bitstream DTS Master Audio and Dolby TrueHD along with the 8 channel LPCM audio capabilities supported by the previous GTX 400 series cards. This brings NVIDIA up to par with AMD, who has offered bitstreaming on the entire range of Radeon HD 5000 series cards.

Much like the launch of 3D Vision Surround however, this feature is late. It is not supported in the initial shipping drivers for the GTX 460 and will be made available at a later unknown date. We’ll be sure to test it along with the rest of the GTX 460’s HTPC capabilities once it’s available.

Never mind, I just tried the latest drivers on my Gigabyte 9400m motherboard and they work!
Windows sounds still don't work for whatever reason, but if I pause PCM audio and resume, there's no delay.
Unfortunately, bitstreaming is as unstable as ever, and even when working, takes three times as long to initialize with my amp (H/K AVR 254) as the Realtek ATI driver took.
Windows sounds work, but they're cut off. It's the silent stream bug and it's the same with my 9200m GS. What version of the driver do you have though? Cause with my 9200 1.0.9.0 is working fine but 1.0.15.0 doesn't send audio to anything but the R and L channel, in the 7.1 configuration.
Crap, I just remembered that WinDVD doesn't allow ReClock in the chain. Hopefully TMT3 won't muck the decoded audio with this card. I'll get it later today. I'm also going to try and fit an Accelero S1 later on. I got the Palit with the (presumably) crappy cooler.

That's why we think they're doing something a bit "different" than PDVD and TMT. They don't allow anything to enter their chain. GraphStudio wasn't able to attach to their graph, either. But I think this is what allows them to get away with their "own" implementation of "PAP".
The hybrid system is that with an ATI and a Nvidia card together? I am using an ATI and Nvidia (for the PhysX) and I can't get Total Media Theater and PowerDVD 10 to play. I am assuming it was a conflict between the two drivers. If that is the case I am going to have to try WinDVD.

Yup, it seems to work with any card/driver that implements the new WAVEFORMATEX that includes the HD audio info. Either that or they get some serious inside info from manufacturers that none of their competitors get.

I'm pretty sure they're using the WAVEFORMATEX type with their media foundation classes. (Same stuff MS uses for WMP/7MC). It would seem that somehow they're able to protect it in such a way that satisfies the PAP requirement. That's amazingly slick. It would also explain why Xonar and Auzentech DON'T work because they use custom types and custom renderers. Because they're using media foundation classes, the graph can't be spied upon which probably is what makes it safe. I like it. A lot.

I'm using 1.0.15.0. Windows sounds are now coming, tho cutoff like you said. In a 5.1 configuration, all 6 channels I tested are working. There is no silent stream bug when pausing a PCM stream, but it takes longer to initialize with my amp when starting any video file or when bitstreaming than my 5450.
Yup, it means that it should work with any standard implementation of cards/drivers, even those not yet produced. No more waiting for updates for that new card. Always a good thing for the end user. Now if they could just make some changes to the front end....

I agree on the front end part of that. Their codecs are amazing. PQ in video is great. Clearly the audio support is better than anyone expected. Job well done on the back end. Front end....not so much.
Just got the card and I'm still testing it, but from a quick first run:
-88.2 kHz not available (either via mixer or WASAPI exclusive).
-All other formats the ATI has (the ones above 44.1kHz anyway), including quadraphonic, are available.
-Silent stream bug pretty much the same as ATI 5000 with ATI driver.
-TMT3 decodes, but outputs at 16-bit.
-WinDVD does bitstream, but we already knew this.
-This:
That was with WinDVD. ffdshow does not bitstream DD Plus, probably albain will take care of it now that there's a device that can bitstream it.
Also, it exhibits a lot of similarities with the ATI driver, such as ReClock not being able to change channels in DirectSound mode (probably because of PAP?), and the bug with Media Center where you have to disable MC sounds.
He can't until someone gets him the media type information. That can't be done from WinDVD. We'll need to wait for another solution to support the card, unfortunately.

I thought bitstreaming was a given when I talk about audio.
Yea, for decoding, TMT3 is the best of them. PDVD10 is good, but, I'm not sure if they got their DTS-HD MA 7.1 issues worked out or not. WinDVD....I've never tried.
It has some issues that could be addressed. The "7MC integration" is embarrassing at best. Nonetheless, it does a good job overall. And for the price most of us paid, well, can't really go wrong. I should really update mine to the latest build.
Well next for me is running the battery of video tests, and if I'm comfortable enough with it all, try to fit an Accelero S1. These Palit cards though have a warranty sticker on the screws, I don't think I have seen that with any other cards I've had before.
199 bucks is quite steep but I'm glad the audio features are finally in
