I have about 30 movies in mkv format.
What is the best software to use to have them listed like in a library? I'm thinking something like the title, with possibly the movie case, description, and possibly rating?

Is there anything like that?

Try taking a look at Windows Media Center, MediaBrowser, XBMC, Mediaportal, SageTV, Boxee. Any of those will do all that you have described.

No offense, but did you even bother to read anything on this site?

Here are your options:
Windows Media Center (base)
Media Browser
MyMovies
XBMC
Mediaportal
Sage
Boxee
MythTV

Personally I use Win7MCE with the Mediabrowser plugin

I wonder why anybody would need rating for his own collection of 30 movies. When you saw the movie and like it, who cares about official rating?

Deviating a little - if we narrow the choice to Win XP without MCE (which is my situation), I couldn't find anything that would play most formats and could allow cataloging or hierarchy - whatever it's called when I can create groups and folders rather than seeing the entire list in alphabet. Some don't play FLV, others display ripped DVD container as a list of all files, instead of playing via right-click-->"Play With..." or left-click, some don't automatically play part 2 after part 1 of the same title (if the movie was saved in 2 parts).

Thank you, everything I found was too broad.
I ended up buying the one from Collectorz.com for $40, but I might get it refunded now that I see these ones. Media browser looks alright, so does XBMC but I prefer to have MPC as my viewer.

Xlobby page says "xLobby is NOT sold as a software only solution, it is sold as a preconfigured hardware package ready for use out of the box".

Don't need no stinky box.

http://www.collectorz.com/movie/ says it costs $25, but may be it's a different "collectorz". It's not a 10ft interface anyway. Folder view in Windows Explorer, customized (thumbnailed where possible) doesn't look much different.

Xlobby goes hand in hand with the Lynx browser , GUI wise

PS: I think larryep was ironic, or at least i hope so.

Mediabrowser can be configured to launch MPC as an external player. I think XBMC can as well, though I am not sure

I got XBMC and everything is working pretty good. I really like the way it looks.
I just have a question, obviously I'm new, but would there be a difference in quality using MPC with ffdshow and using the player in XBMC?
