I own a ATI 5670 card that I mainly use for watching movies in 1080p and bitstreaming lossless audio from BRs.

But what is the best config to use when you want to play music from my HTPC? (which software, decoder etc) I ve also read something about using WASAPI? Can someone help me on my way?

I use foobar with a KS plug-in, but WASAPI would also be good. Care to share more info on your setup?

If you are sending it to an AVR, why not let it do the sound processing for your music too?

Does ATI5xxx have the silent stream bug as well? Issue when playing high bitrate FLAC via WASAPI.. where the first song has sound but when proceed to the second song, there will be no sound afterall...

My system has an ati 5450 and everything is fed via hdmi to my receiver. When I play a BD rip via TMT3, I get 5.1 HD sound (TruehHD, DTS-HD, or lpcm) and, when I playback my CD rips, my receiver automatically switches to 2.1 based on the audio feed via hdmi even though Win7 is configured for 5.1.

i use foorbar2000 with ALAC for lossless files and the WASAPI component using exclusively with the toslink on a dedicated input in the AVR to prevent frequent handshakes, ie no need for HDMI much more responsive this way, the AVR does the DAC and it recognizes when i switch between files with different sampling rate or bitrates

WASAPI sends the pcm directly after decoding bit for bit to the AVR circumventing any windows mixers or "enhancements"

foobar is controlled with an ipod using the itunes remote.

ps.
its an HK 254

The best OS to use is win7.
The player should support WASAPI for the PCM output. On HDMI
it ensures you get right channel mapping (2.0,2.1,5.1 etc) passed to
the processor. WASAPI also prevents resampling of the audio.

I use XBMC Dharma and Foobar 2k.
