Is the ATI Radeon 5670 beefy enough for MadVR?

Read the first 10 pages. Wow, lots of debate on MadVR, hope this was put to rest, or do I need to read the next 20 pages? lol

I've heard mentioned of MadVR allowing changing gray scale and color gamut to match a calibrated display? Anyone care to elaborate? Thanks

As an "on the record" skeptic of MadVR I think it has a definite role for some users depending on what you are using your HTPC for. If you are using your HTPC on a 50" screen watching mainly 1080p content then you are less likely to see a dramatic improvement. If you are watching interlaced non-HD content on 120" screen then you are more likely to see a difference.

A few well respected people such as Shark007 (publicly) and about a half dozen others that have sent me private messages have tested extensively and found no difference. I tested ---- but I admit it wasn't extensively as I "only" have a 61" 1080p display and watch limited interlaced content.

Even so I think the consensus is that it CAN offer an improvement in PQ. As Nevacariel once said LAV and MPC-HC gets you to about 90-95% and Madvr may get that last 5%.

So the answer: It could. It could not.

And yes, I follow this thread regularly as I want to try Madvr again once I move and am finally able to afford and install a 120" projection screen.

I see, so the debate is still on. I am the kinda guy that like to squeze every ounce of performance out of my gears, especially if it doesn't require me pulling my hair out or puting my gears at risk. So I'll certainly incorporate MadVR into the equation since I already have a discreet card and there's no drop in performance for doing so.

With those HTPCs you're selling, you should be more than able to afford a couple Black Diamond screens.

EDIT: I am very interested in this ability to adjust grayscale and color gamut, if anyone care to chime in.

1. Our margins aren't that high and we aren't really in it to make money
2. We have a team. So what little profit we do make after all the overhead is extremely negligible after we split it up.

Let's put it this way --- I am not quitting my day job. And I have no intentions to get rich or even turn a good profit. We really do just want to get people into HTPC and as long as it continues to be enjoyable we will keep doing it.

In installed MPC-HC. Lav codecs, and MadVR. Basically followed instructions on the first page.

Got bit streaming to work perfectly, however i had two issues with video.

1) playback is very stutter, never experience this with either TMT or WMP

2) skin tone looks very off.

I did select DXVA copyback as hardware decoding for my ATI radeon 5670 graphic card.

Not sure what I am missing.

thanks, i'll give that a try.

also, in CCC Video -> Settings, I deslected everything except 'Deinterlacing' and 'Automatic Pulldown'

I really didn't see any difference between YCC 4:4:4 and RGB 0-255

i really can't stand this. i am playing a 720p blu-ray rip and the image is grainy and got artifacts (especially on skin tone).

i must be doing something wrong. even on a 21inch 1080p monitor it still looks grainy.

You need to throw out that red/white/yellow analog cable and use that little that looks like someone stepped on the end of it. Think they call it HDMI

Rather than under Subtitle in the MPC_HC menu I found the switch for selecting the subtitle stream under both Navigate and under Filters> LAV Splitter Source as well in the MPC-HC menu..

Are there any recommendations on what to select in the LAV Splitter Source > Properties dialog box?

Did you make this rip? Can you re-rip to 1080p? I've played a couple 720p mkv's on my 2005 40" 120Hz Samsung LCD. They're a little grainy but not more than I expected. They looked pretty good actually.

I have both 720p and 1080p rips. They both look grainy.

The thing is I have no problem with the picture playing in either TMT5 or WMP.

It's just MPC-HC that's giving me issues, I think I must have not configured things correctly (either in CCC, MadVR, or MPC-HC).

I wish there was a guid that tell you what you need to do exactly in CCC, MadVR, etc.

im guessing thats just what the video looks like.

you can play around with postprocessing in the amd drivers and turn off enforce smooth video playback, and see how it looks then, but a purist would prefer no postprocessing.

i disabled every post processing optinos in CCC, except for "deinterlacing' and 'auto pulldown'

again. what should i select in the CCC driver for RGB/YCC?

Can you guys post what your settings are in Catalyst Control Center?

This is what I've gathered from reading multiple threads here and over at Doom9.

- RGB Full
- Dynamic 0-255
- Disable all post processing options (including 'auto pull down' and 'de-interlacing')

Did I miss anything else? Also, what version of AMD CCC driver you guys running? Is it good practice to always go grab the latest driver?

Thanks!

just curious:

are people using dxva copyback and getting good performance with uvd 2.2? (radeon 5000 series)

I'm thinking perhaps I should add some type of warning for older amd cards and dxva copyback if it appears to basically require uvd 3.0.

For me the copyback is horrible but the other option works great with my old HD2600 Pro so I can confirm it is awesome with 1080p files.

With my 5450 I got periodic freezes for 1080 and I suspect that 720 is not smooth enough too. So Cyberlink HAM still the best HWA option for me with madVR. Low GPU bus bandwidth/speed, need 7750 or Ivy.

I couldn't really get dxva copyback to work perfectly with madvr on my overclocked 4870.

I think it might be some type of flaw in uvd 2.0 and possibly older cards.

The decoder in isolation works comfortably, and madvr with software decoding works comfortably, but together, the card doesn't manage well.

I'm wondering if the uvd 2.2 cards exhibit a similiar effect? that would be most of the 4000 series, and all of the 5000 series.

I'm assuming everything is fine with the uvd 3 cards, the 6000 and 7000 series.

I've a 5570 using DXVA Copyback and have had no complaints playing high bitrate BD remuxes to .mkv. CPU is in the low 40%'s
