so I want to build a htpc, and I have an old cpu chip laying around.

but I want to make sure that this will fit a motherboard which will let me upgrade into the future. when I want to move up to i3 if need be.

as this is a socket 775 chip cpu, will a 1155 socket mother board be able to run the E6650? or do I have to buy a motherboard which is 775 socket?

You will need a socket 775 motherboard. The E6650 won't work, or even fit, in a socket 1155 m/b.
