Very concerned about the lack of VC-1 and DTS support. This would render the device useless for me and a lot of others.

Crap-I missed that. I can live without HD Audio, but DTS is a dealbreaker.

Isn't vc-1 covered by WMV9 support?

Maybe maybe not. I think it needs to implement WMV9 Advanced Profile to handle the VC1 on Blu-ray or HD DVD.

See what an anamorphoscopic lens can do, see movies the way they were meant to be seen

About the only hope I have at this point is that what's listed is what the Echo can decode, but that it can pass/bitstream other formats, but at this point I'm guessing not, and it appears my WMC experiment has come to an end.

I for one would be a lot happier if the thing could be made to run XBMC than if they tried to cobble MKV and other support into WMC. That's the way I use my PC now; WMC for TV only, and XBMC for all other video.

+1

While it would be great if this little box could do everything, I've got plenty of other devices that can stream blu-ray rips and the like. As an extender, the Echo is ideal. I'm very happy with the way it turned out (small, quiet, low power, simple). I'll definitely be replacing my Xboxes when the prices drop a little.

Available on eBay now as used models, none newer than what, 3 years old? My experience with the DMA2100 about a year ago was not good, and I found prior discussions about the problems I had. It stuttered occasionally when configured to output 1080p (definitely not 29/59 related), it had occasional reproducible audio glitches when configured for 5.1 output that did not occur when using the HTPC directly, and it needed to be rebooted every couple of weeks. The first two problems could be worked around by using 720p and stereo, and that's the only way I would recommend using the thing.

Because I've already got SageTV and 3 extenders, and SageTV is a way better DVR than WMC (yes Sage lacks the DRM to play protected CableCard recordings). WMC is (was?) my fallback plan when SageTV or my extenders die. I need something that's functionally equivalent to what I have with SageTV and my extenders, and the info given the Echo falls far, far short of the HD300.

I'm in the same boat as you Stanger. Still holding on to my 3 HD300's until something better comes along. I was hopeing that would be the Echo... Perhaps the Tivo Mini will deliver

This isn't very helpful. There are a number of reasons not to convert movies to other formats, mainly ease of use and preservation of quality. Supporting all blu-ray codecs is crucial for people that want to playback their high quality blu-ray movies on the Echo. I wasn't really expecting lossless blu-ray audio support, but we at least need VC-1 and DTS. Can you even convert the blu-ray audio losslessly to a format the Echo supports? I don't see FLAC support.

You could convert it to PCM, but I have my doubts it supports 7.1 PCM given the other specifications.

Eric/Motz, if you can't talk about what's not on your site, you better update your site with what the Echo can actually do if you don't want to lose a "lot" of your beta testers.

And don't forget that the 360 can do a lot more in the terms of streaming services also. (Netflix etc)

IMO, why should we have to convert anything in this day and age? We should at least be able to play a ripped dvd with DTS, I should think, or why bother releaseing a product at all.

That being said none off us have an Echo in our hands yet. Maybe Ceton will provide us with great FW updates and this will be a moot point. Or we will just have a DMA 2100, which I tested for two days and returned promptly.

It supports PCM but how to get, say, dts-HD/MA converted to PCM on the fly?

Also, How to convert mkv back to m2ts on the fly?

I mostly want a PVR/DVR extender but the cost of this is a bit high if these issues aren't worked out durnig the beta program.

I wonder if third party f/w flashing will be permitted but ceton would need to release the source code.

Kind of on topic, has anyone been able to login to the Ceton forums yet? I registered but have not received a confirmation email. When I registered it stated I could not post until confirmed. But I can't even see the forum topics at this point?

So many questions..

1. Can I connect a bluetooth usb adapter and use bluetooth enabled devices like a smartphone or a Logitech diNovo mini?
2. Can I use wireless Ethernet adapter via usb?
3. Can I use my harmony remote with it (i.e.. program a Ceton echo device into the harmony)?
4. My infinitv PCIe card is connected to my WHS2011 server and the tuners are distributed to other HTPC's via network bridge. Would those tuners be available to the echo?
5. Will it play back any movie I can throw at it (mkv, avi, mp4, etc...)

Make room in your boat for me! I am in the same situation.
I was hopeful the Echo would have as a minimum the same feature set as the HD-300. Whats even worse is the Echo has less features and will only work on a dieing product (WMC).

I have a Patriot Box Office that streams HD Audio. The GUI is a flashed Med8tor f/w and runs a little slow but the PBO plays mkv's with full HD Audio in 1080p24. It cost me $60 a year and a half ago. The Echo needs to support these formats to be a success IMHO.

But really, I'm more troubled by Ceton's unwillingness to give us straight answers on media playback capabilities. We've been asking about container support for a long, long time. I really don't get why they aren't saying anything there.

If you're playing bluray rips with DTS, I'd imagine this does the same thing as the Xbox does with DTS and downsamples to 2ch (I think?). If you're not using a receiver, then that should be sufficient, no?
