I am about to build one once Ivy Bridge 3770T comes out. But I am new to this. I want to build an HTPC such that it can do the things I want to do as well as what other people here might do.

To do this I need to figure what an HTPC can do. After several days of readings, I came up with

1) de-interlace 1080i signals into 1080p in real time
2) record TV programs
3) play new video/audio formats that are otherwise not yet supported by hardware media players, e.g. hi10p

Are there other functions I am not aware of??

Thanks

There's not a whole lot that a HTPC can't do. But here's a recent thread to get you started:

Thank you for your reply. Now I find two more applications

4) stream internet video/audio
5) upscale dvd content to 1080p

As to 5), is it only doable to uncompressed dvd content? What if I have dvdrip in avi/rmvb form??? Can they be upscaled? Or pretty much any low res content can be upscaled? Thanks

anything, any res, can be upscaled... as to if it will make it look (or sound, in the case of audio) any better depends...
you can't really add any 'data/detail' that isn't in the original file... the HTPC can only make a good guess at what the additional data should be...

NOTE: As one wise professional something once stated, I am ignorant & childish, with a mindset comparable to 9/11 troofers and wackjob conspiracy theorists. so don't take anything I say as advice...

I use my "HTPC" for skype webcam chat, internet chat, email, and web browsing too. Nothing beat large screen computing if you have the luxury to do it.

Can your HTPC Media Center / DVR Do this??

SageTV: Unrestricted full-quality 12 tuner HD Premium Cable recording, including "On Demand" in HD + OTA ATSC + DVB-S2 + Blu-ray/HD-DVD serving 5 clients.

Mine greatly annoys the wife; not sure if that's an actual function, though.

This is important for those of us who only have a 60Hz TV. (Could be an older plasma, not necessarily an LCD)

Also important if you don't like 24->60fps 3:2 judder.
