It would sound really awesome if Silicondust could figure out DRM issues!!

I am a cable user, and my cable provider marks all content as protected, so, that doesn't do a ton of good for me until Silicondust has worked through the DRM issues, current preventing playback from my cable provider :-(

For "OTA" programming, which is that this DVR talks about - it would still be quite nice, but at the moment, I don't do any OTA.

Yeah, I was just reading about that.

I would like to try it out but do not have the tuner.

What exactly is the difference between the Connect and Extend besides Wifi AC -vs- N?

I don't need wifi so thinking might pick up the base model to play with. Would have to split antenna signal currently going to my Tivo.

Note that the difference actually does not have to do with wifi. Neither of these units have any wifi capabilities. The difference is that the Extend can transcode on the fly so that the stream your devices receive are native, and they are compressed to work better on wifi. The Connect cannot transcode. Note the Extend can also transcode before recording, reducing the space needed for recordings.

Unfortunately I don't see that as a Silicon Dust issue unless of course the content isn't being flagged by your provider and they are setting it as it is. If the provider does it then Silicon Dust has to honor that otherwise they would probably get in trouble for breaking some kind of BS Copyright Violation.

That said I have TiVOs and use their Application to download recordings off of them and I am very surprised at what is and what isn't flagged as Copy Protected. It really doesn't make sense. I do find it funny that pretty much everything on ESPN is copy protected while some of the pay channels aren't. Go figure =)

The only reason I feel it is a Silicon Dust issue is because they sold an entire Kickstarter DVR campaign, promising DVR capability, including DVR of DRM protected content... saying it would be delivered nearly a year ago. They have made lots of progress, but still no DRM approved approach. They got me to buy their hardware, as well as many others buying their hardware & supporting the campaign.

So, although conceptually I agree with your statement, I feel this situation is a bit different given Silicon Dust sold enough of the Kickstarter campaign to not only fund the 'base campaign, but also fund their "stretch goals" of KODI and Plex support (Stretch Goals are where if they get a lot more people who support the campaign, they state they will deliver the stretch goals as 'bonuses' based on the extra revenue brought in).

Having said what I have... I am actually excited by the fact that Plex has this capability now... My family isn't super tech friendly, they have learned to use Plex... so, once Silicon Dust gets DRM issues resolved, it is awesome to know that the Plex functionality will be ready to go!

This isn't related to the SD HDHR DVR; it's Plex's own DVR with no relation save for both support the same tuners only ATM (with Plex possibly adding support for non HDHR tuners to their solution in the future, which SD won't do).

SD's HDHR DVR solution for Plex will be a Plex add-on/channel as they explained (similar to how it is in Kodi - it's a Kodi add-on, not baked into Kodi). That one has still yet to see the light of day.

Thanks for the clarification, I missed that distinction while I skimmed the publication!

A bit disappointing, based on my personal plan, but good to see Plex continues developing its' capabilities!

I actually got an EMAIL from Plex telling me about it with a link. So, I've read through what is available on the Plex site. It looks good as a backup OTA recording device and I could have fun with it, but it certainly is not in the class of a DVR -- no buffered live-TV with trick-play pause and rewind functionality. So I would look at Plex-DVR as supplementary for someone who already has a DVR and just needs a couple extra tuners for collecting shows that are meant to be watched much later. Much in the same way I used NextPVR to supplement my TiVo until I got a pair of 4-tuner Roamios.

I do have an HDHR tuner I used to use with a PC DVR but don't have a Plex-Pass to kick the tires of the Plex-DVR. So there is one key piece of information I could not find in the Plex write-up. I see no mention of any skip-forward/skip-backward functionality for skipping over commercials. I've never been very happy with the response of Plex FF/RW so if this is what one is stuck with for skipping past commercials, I would pass on Plex-DVR.

I'm considering giving Plex another look. Only a handful of my movies have TrueHD. Are there any issues with having both SPMC and Plex installed on the Shield?

No problem; on Android apps are sandboxed/silo'd off. Stuff like that isn't an issue like it is/can be on desktop OSs.

On second thought, Plex may not work for me after all. I just did a filter sort on movies with TrueHD in DVD Profiler and it turns out I have 114 titles with a TrueHD soundtrack. That's only about 10% of my collection, but it's still a lot more than I thought I had.

Use Plex Server and run SPMC with PlexKodiConnect to link your library. You'll get Plex and TrueHD.

Already running Plex Server on my PC and SPMC with PlexKodiConnect on the Shield. Just wondering if maybe the Plex app was a better experience than SPMC.

It's not on the Shield. I prefer Plex's interface, but the fact they don't have skip forward and skip back buttons ruins it for me.

Me too. Love the interface but need skip forward/back! Until they add this their DVR stuff is a non-starter for me, can you imagine trying to skip commercials with the current method?

I think the posts were about the Nvidia Shield app. You have to use SPMC to get TrueHD on a SHIELD.

A PC with Plex Media Player or Plex Home Theater can do all those formats.

Have not been able to do so with AppleTV 4. Figuring that's the Apple's fault. But not getting any streaming through it.

Cause he said plex media player, Apple TV doesn't have plex media player. I've been streaming advanced audio just fine with PMP on the chromebox since last year.

AppleTV 4 loads Plex as an APP an uses Plex Media Server.

Even have 3D sorta working. Have to manually set the TV to 3D. But otherwise its fine.

No HD audio pass through however.

"Plex Media Player" is the name of a standalone program. It is not the same thing as the AppleTV Plex app.
