Hello Folks, I need some of your wisdom and experience. I am completely new to the idea of HTPC but am very intrigued by the idea. I am in the process of assembling a mostly DIY home theater (speakers and amps) and had just planned to pick up a Datasat RS20i or AP20 for the preamp/processor. Then I noticed the software they are using for room correction (Direc Live) is being offered as standalone software. I then began to wonder if maybe I could just build a dedicated PC to do my audio decoding, room correction and audio trickery. I could use all digital outputs for my channels and use an external DAC. This would allow me to take advantage of future audio formats and additional channels without having to replace my pre/pro.

So I guess my question (yes I actually have one) can a HTPC really be a replacement for a highend pre/pro ? Can I setup a HTPC that will work seamless and glitchfree during day to day use ? Can I get audio quality to match that of dedicated pre/pro ? Should I just forget this beehive and just buy the commercial units ?

Yes, a HTPC can make an excellent pre/pro. I just published a 10,000+ word dissertation on this very subject over at my blog.

Sounds like a fun project. Good luck with that.

I had actually planned to buy your subscription thingy after I found your JRiver articles, I just have to find some time to read them I guess. But before I jumped head in I just want to be sure this isn't going to be a waste. Considering the pre/pros I had been looking at were in the $8-12k I don't mind dropping some money on this project as long as I am not wasting my time. My biggest concern is some kind of hickup during a movie, would be rather annoying and sometimes embarrassing

I guess I need to start doing my research There is a cool Lynx card that will output AES/BEU for 16 channels .... seems like the logical place to start.

Prism Audio Orpheus, 8 channel DAC, analog volume control, fully balanced circuitry (the amps I will be using are true balanced architecture), and this is firewire (no need for a fancy soundcard).
