I found quite a few older threads, some plugins do not even appear to exist anymore. Just wondering what some of the more popular plugins everyone is using. So far I am planning on MediaBrowser. I have seen others that I was thinking of trying like second.tv. I found a weather one but cannot get it to work. Any inputs on what you recommend?

thanks

I used to use HeatWave but, yeah, it's broken. Apparently whatever web services it originally used went from free to pay for.

I am not using any plugins now, unless you count Netflix.

Media Browser is by far the highest value plugin IMO. Checkout the setup guides, as MB itself has plugins and a hefty number of setup options. (Mostly aesthetic).

The other plugins / utilities I run:

- Media Center Master
- Auto Rip N Compress / Make MKV
- DVRMS Toolbox / Showanalyzer (Commercial Skipping)
- My Channel Logos
- Shark007 Codecs
- SpeedFan
- Splashtop
- AirPlayIt
- Airplayclient

Also - I re-numbered all the channels to be in (my opinion) a logical grouping:

- 100+ = Networks / Cable
- 200+ = Sports
- 300+ = News
- 400+ = Kids / PBS (I have 7 PBS stations)
- 500+ = Movies and Premium Channels
- 600+ = Cable Music Channels

Keeps things nice and clean.

I currently use the Boxee, Hulu Desktop, Plex, and XBMC integration plugins. I also use SecondRun.TV for a couple online streams such as ESPN3 and GTTV since I couldn't find a working app for Plex, Boxee, or XBMC and the Gametrailers apps don't seem to have the most recent episodes of GTTV. Even Hulu Plus has only older seasons. I also use this plugin I forgot the name of that adds channel logos to the TV guide and MCE Toolbox to configure my main menu so that only items I use show up and to rename the movies section to Netflix.

Edit: My Channel Logos, that's the name I couldn't remember. ( =

Just because I don't care, doesn't mean I don't understand.

Only problem with Media Browser is that it doesn't launch TMT5 properly.

I still use it (there is a work around, but its an older version of TMT5) and that's about the only add-in anymore.

What do you mean? The MCE version or the standalone version? For ISO mounted files or folder playback?

Is AirPlayIt support ISO playback? Thanks.

A while back I looked at the source. It used The Weather Channel's API to pull in it's data. Looking at the pricing for the API, an "application/widgets/toolbars/extensions/etc" having current temperature and 5 day forcast with no extras (maps, averages, alerts, etc) for multiple cities for up to 25k requests per month in English is $188. Getting the extras such as alerts, averages, maps and 250k requests/month takes the price over $600.

I don't blame them for dropping support although other data sources exist that probably could be used.

Yeah, XBMC switched to Weather Underground and there is also the option to use Weather Plus if you download the plugin. In addition to this, I downloaded the animated weather icons and a fanart pack that I set up to show the appropriate fanart based on current weather conditions. Besides the integration of other apps I use, I try to keep my WMC install pretty clean since I really only want to use it for live TV, DVR, and a home page for when I start my HTPC before switching to something else like Hulu or XBMC.

Just because I don't care, doesn't mean I don't understand.

Doesn't look like it does. (http://www.airplayit.com/streaming-video.htm)

My media is all .mkv / .avi / .mp4. What I especially like is that it streams the .wtv files. Comes in real handy when traveling.

Heatwave - No other WMC weather plugin came close. Damn shame it's not working anymore!

Revision 3 - Nice streaming Internet TV plugin

TunerFreeMCE - IP streaming of UK (and some US) based TV channels. We don't have Hulu, Netfix etc.

LoveFilm - Like Netflix. Same author as TunerFreeMCE

MediaBrowser - Need I say more!

BoxeeTV - Not updated anymore for the PC, but some interesting content still kicking around.

MyChannelLogos - Great tool. Makes the WMC guide look very slick.

TMT3 - If this counts.

Why would you need to copy a file?

I do this outside of media center. Any type of interface involving folders is pretty annoying inside media center.

FYI everyone: Heatwave is working again. Started one day last week.

Someone over at another forum mentioned they sent the company providing the info an email asking if it was supposed to be working!!?!? lol.

either they haven't read the email and this hasn't been brought to their attention, or the service is now free again.

as for plugins: I use extenders only, so just heatwave and mymovies for me. when I did use the HTPC, in addition to the provided Netflix and internet TV apps, I used the revision3 plugin, the googleTV plugin, hulu desktop w/ the launcher, and xm radio which no longer works. but I did read somewhere that niveus media has made their Sirius XM app available to everyone. while not as nice as the original, it does the job. oh and the espn3 app, which from what I've seen is dead again. I also had the kylo browser.

Joe for some reason the ESPN3 Add-on for XBMC is working! I watch the entire ALMS 6 Hours of Laguna Seca yesterday. The thing I don't like about Second Run TV with ESPN3 is that it doesn't automatically default to full screen.

You should try it...

Plug-ins -
  • SecondRunTV 2.0
  • Windows Media Center Internet TV
  • Macro Tube
  • Hulu Desktop with intergration tool
  • XBMC with intergration tool

SecondRunTV and MacroTube gave me access to ESPN3 and You Tube inside Media Center. However ESPN3 doesn't default to full screen when SR opens the web site.

Overall I find it lacking, I may keep it since I paid for 2.0. I had been looking for a better solution for ESPN3, see below...

MacroTube I have already documented that its no longer being developed and You Tube doesn't work right, again see below....

XBMC I downloaded the tried to see if I could solve these issues and save for some minor issues it has!

The You Tube Add-on is superior to MacroTube as it gives you access to your account, subscriptions and creates thumbnails - Brilliant! This makes it easy to find new videos added to the channels I watch most.

The ESPN3 Add-on had been balking with a script error. But all of a sudden when I needed it too work, it did! I watched the American Le Mans Series race at Laguna Seca, all six hours of it without any major issues. With about 40 mins to go, the stream itself had problems, but the plug-in performed great.

The issue I have with Hulu Desktop is that series don't play completely in order. What typically happens is that it will play episodes 1-10, but then skips to 12 or 14 or something (during auto play). It happen when watching back to back episodes of Speed Racer, Rockford Files, Knight Rider and lately Star Blazers.

Overall, everything works, no errors. I just requested a Speed2 add-on since DirecTV now supports Speed TV's Speed2 Online Channel.

I also might look at a MotorsportTV add-on since one was created for Roku.

Lastly, I may retry Rom Collector Browser but I found you can add Hyperspin to XBMC -

Like the National Weather Service that actually provides the raw data to all other weather providers.

I just re-installed it on my Win7 (x64) HTPC and the forecasts appeared.

Thanks for the heads up, brantmacga!
