I tried this little trick again and guess what?

It worked.

I think so.

I have created a custom driver now for this thing. I am going to hang on to it.

Might even show up in a guide somewhere.

I bet not . I think Assassin has mentioned that all the guides are being move 100% to the blog due to forum space limits or something to the effect .

When the memory bus signal hits an unterminated open stub such as an unoccupied socket, it will propagate in the opposite direction and create a secondary waveform at any receiver on the bus. Worse case is to have the last slot open because it takes the longest to get to and create a secondary signal that is the farthest from the initial signal.

Usually there are damping on the MB but best practice is still to occupy the last slot.

Had a little more time today.

Awaiting the additional 120mm front fan early this week when it arrives and then the hardware is finished.

Majority of hardware and wire management complete.

4 bay hard drive cage. Rear view.

8 SATA ports occupied. You can see 3 additional SATA cables run and ready to go. All they need is a controller card for expansion.

Upper 5.25" bays. One occupied with a bluray drive and three bays are awaiting additional adapter for more hard drives. Cables (SATA data and power) run and ready to go --- also visible in this pic.

Lower hard drive cage awaiting 3 additional hard drives. SATA power cables run and ready to go.

Nice indeed . A bit of an understatement for me

Man ... what nice attention to detail . Looks like nothing in spending time was spared here .

You've already shared what is left on the hardware side which is an extra fan to cool the hdds . Any thoughts you would care to share ? Such as some initial temps of the system . Maybe squeeze out a thought or two about what is next from you?

Can't blame a guy for trying and I am sure the forum doesn't blame me for trying either

In any case .... REALLY sweet build !

Initial temps from the system are very good.

I am happy with the build. I can't think of 1 thing I would have done differently. Otherwise I will detail my upcoming plans once I finalize them.

BTW --- The integrated Intel NIC works very well. I unhooked it to do a few tests on my new HD Homerun using that cable so I am using the integrated wireless on the Server right now.

I have been battling this tonight. There are workarounds posted out there but the drivers that they worked with have all been taken down by Intel.

Bottom line: Don't spend extra to get an Intel integrated NIC if you are using WHS as you can't install the drivers --- even manually.

Here is the best discussion I could find on this issue...

http://communities.intel.com/thread/...rt=15&tstart=0

Not worth all this trouble and headache to save $25 and 1 PCI-e lane. Just get a Realtek NIC board and add an Intel NIC PCI-e.

Update: I got it working. See page 3.

I've elected to go with this board with dual NIC:
http://www.bcmcom.com/bcm_product_rx67q.htm

It seems 82579LM should be supported:
http://downloadcenter.intel.com/Deta...=%0ADrivers%0A

We'll see if the driver works for WHS 11.

Why Google Chrome on WHS? Do you have any sort of virus protection installed? I'd consider removing it and reverting back to the locked down IE. You don't really want to encourage web browsing on the server.

Because I am also running MSE.

There are definite reasons one would want to access the internet from a server, btw. I have built and designed this server to meet the use of the end user --- not how I would use a server.

How did you get MSE (MS Security Essentials right?) to install in WHS 2011?

I bought some SATA III SAS 8087 cables from them for my raid card and they we price competitive with Newegg and very high quality. Braided cables, nicely labeled and metal locking clips. I'm definitely getting more cables from them for my server project. Oh and I had meant Monoprice cables sorry.

Looks like it's going to be a great server system. I've built rack servers, using super mtherbrds with areca raid cards, in the past. Definitely not built for the living room, too much fan noise.

FYI: newegg has the Roswill THOR V2 on sale, for those that prefer a tower...it's huge though, with 6 external and 6 internal 5.25" slots. EMCNEJE56 http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...11147053-L018C
