ok well goal is to play and burn bluray discs

looking at
cpu amd phenom x4 3.0gh
mem at least 8gb
vid card nvidia 8500gt maybe

any input would help alot if u are burning bluray discs tell me your specs been away from the comp seen for a while and need some input

Lots of questions arise:
Do you already have these parts or are you looking to make new purchases?
Do you have a HD capable receiver for audio?
Do you need a nice HTPC case (like a living room component)?

I would say the components listed are overkill for a HTPC. If you already have the parts then its a different story since they are better put to reuse.

Plenty of stickies here on selecting components, check out Assassin's guide (I am sure Flocko will be here shortly to direct you to Assassin's paid guides).
And the 8500 is pretty weak for HTPC, and will probably not do hardware acceleration. Get a 6450 for $30 or so.
