Hey all, I'm seeking help to a very strange problem.

I've had my HTPC- Intel i7 860, Asus P7P55D, 8GB DDR3, Crucial 256GB M4, Win7, Radeon HD5770 HDMI -> Onkyo TX-SR707 -> Samsung 720p LCD working perfectly for years, never ever had a problem.

I just bought a Sapphire Radeon HD7850 for summertime gaming because I plan on getting a 55" 1080p LED soon. I installed it a couple nights ago, ran 3D Mark 2011, scored great, then played some YouTube videos because friends were over...

and I discovered that in EVERY video I played, the audio would skip, or cut out/drop out for a second (and the receiver would show no audio signal) and then the sound would come back on just like that. Video is not affected.

At first I thought it might have been the Flash hardware acceleration, so I unchecked that. Still cut out. Then I tried a HTML5 video, still cut out. Then I looped music on iTunes, still cut out for a second, about every 2-5 mins. Then I tried Catalyst 12.3, 12.4, 12.5 beta, and 12.6 beta. Still randomly dropped signal for a second in anything I played.

Then I formatted, still same problem. Then I put my HD5770 back in, and viola, everything played perfectly.

Hmmmm, so it is a faulty 7850??? I then put the 7850 in my office comp (Intel E6600, Gigabyte P35-DSL3, 4GB DDR2), and the audio still skipped in everything I played. I put my HD5770 in this computer, and viola, everything plays fine.

So it has to be the 7850 right??? I then connected my 7850 HDMI directly to my Samsung LCD INSTEAD of my Onkyo. NO audio drops at all!!!!!!!

So is it my receiver or the 7850? I don't want to get a new 7850 only to discover my Onkyo 707 still has the same issue, and I'm hesitant to get a new receiver (although I want to get one that supports 3D for my soon to be new 1080p TV) only to find out that the new one also exhibits the same problem.

What should I do?

Office - Onkyo 506, AV123 X-LS Encore Monitors
Living Room -Panasonic 60ST60, Onkyo 707, Ascend Acoustics Sierra-1 LCR
Car - Arc Audio Black 6.2; Arc Audio KS 2500.1, 300.4, 300.2; Audison BitOne; (2) Arc Audio Black 12 v2

For the hundreds of people following this thread,

I ordered a replacement Sapphire 7850, same problem on both receivers.

I ordered a Denon 2312, at first everything played perfectly. Then I turned on Dynamic Volume, and the sound started cutting out every few minutes in everything I played. If I turn off/on the receiver, it plays everything perfectly, until I once again change the Dynamic Volume setting, in which case it starts dropping the audio for a split second again. Wtf?

Happens in 2 computers, yet my Radeon HD5770 plays perfectly.

Are the 7850's incompatible with Dynamic Volume?

Office - Onkyo 506, AV123 X-LS Encore Monitors
Living Room -Panasonic 60ST60, Onkyo 707, Ascend Acoustics Sierra-1 LCR
Car - Arc Audio Black 6.2; Arc Audio KS 2500.1, 300.4, 300.2; Audison BitOne; (2) Arc Audio Black 12 v2

Hey Edgeh2o,

I have a similar setup as you and I'm struggling with the same issue. Every 2mins and 50 seconds the audio drops for about 1 second. I've found a few of your posts on various message boards, and it sounds like a tricky issue to fix. Have you made any progress?

I've updated my video card drivers to the latest beta, disabled SPDIF and haven't yet solved the issue.

I'm going to try disabling Audyssey Dynamic Volume on on the onkyo, but I'd love to keep that feature.
I'm also going to test out dropping the resolution from 1366x768 to 720p, but that isn't going to look good on my Plasma.

I'm considering upgrading my Samsung to new tv that supports 1080p, and that might also solve the dropout issue.

I'd love to hear anything else I could try.

Here is my setup.

HTPC running XBMC
VisionTek Radeon 7850 2GB DDR5 PCI Express Graphics Card
ONKYO TX-SR607
Samsung HP-T5064 at native resolution of 1,366x768
Connected via HDMI

Hello. Im a korean user and Im not good at english. So. just interpret yourself.
I had a same problem as u guys.
I have 7950 and onkyo 707 receiver and after Ver. 12.3 audio drop had occured.
To solve this problem, I compared other drivers and found solution.

open regedit and find
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Video\{XXXX...}\0000
(  'XXXX' means device number. There are several device number folder and u should find 'AdapterDesc' in 0000 folder which key value is 'amd radeon HD 7XXX Series'.   )

At that '0000' folder, Change 'PP_SclkDeepSleepDisable REG_DWORD' value 0 to 1.
I solve this problem like this and hope to resolve the problem.
If it doesn't work, I don't know.!! bye

I can confirm this worked for my 7850.  You will have to reboot for the changes to be reflected, at least I did.  You'll also have to make these changes after every driver update.

JeonjuHot's regedit fix also worked for me. Hopefully, it will help out anyone else who has been pulling out their hair trying to trouble shoot this problem.

Hey, I really need to set email notifications for thread subscriptions, I could be doing that right now, wow I'm lazy.

I sold the 7850 over summer while it was within the return period from Amazon. Been slugging along with my 5770 on my C2D E6600 comp, while my i7-860 comp has sat next to it unused for 3 or whatever months. Going to get a 7870 or 660 soon, just been, well lazy. Thanks for posting though.

This tweak worked fantastic HOWEVER I would like to clarify the instructions a little bit:

1) Open regedit (you can search for this and find it)
2) You may be prompted as to whether you wish to run this as you can screw a lot of things up with it. Click yes or continue.
3) Expand the HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE folder
4) Expand the SYSTEM folder
5) Expand the CurrentControlSet Folder
6) Expand the Control\Video Folder
7) You will have to look through the folders in here to find the "0000" folder that contains a key called "AdapterDesc" when you find it, you're in the correct folder. Don't change this key.
8) Find the "PP_SclkDeepSleepDisable" key and edit it
9) THE ONLY THING YOU SHOULD CHANGE IS THE "0" TO A "1" (without quotations)
10) Reboot
11) Your audio should be fixed.
