Do you have carpets? We do have 2 cats that shed a lot but we don't have rugs except for a couple of area rugs. It's all hardwood/tiles. When your vacuum stops working, what part is broken? The brush/beater? The suction?

The head always broke on ours, usually the belts broke and the motor went. We just had the house redone this past spring and have all wood floor downstairs with area rugs, so it won't be so bad.

They are certainly handy for picking up something I need right away. The trouble is that those sort of things are usually the things that have the most insane markup on them--cables are the most common by far. For those things, I just go to a hardware store. For anything bigger, I'll wait two days for it to arrive from Amazon or wherever, in exchange for saving possibly hundreds of dollars. I'm impatient, but I'm also cheap.

Mostly all carpet in the apartment with a 50lb border collie. I've been pretty successful with belt replacements, hidden bottleneck cleanouts, and even replacing the brush roller. When the motor stops I give up. Mine was a $60 vacuum to begin with, and I had already put $15 replacement parts in. Wasn't about to troubleshoot it's internals to fix it again, they're disposable tools in my mind. I'll probably replace it again in 5 years.

Best Buy, Frys, Walmart, etc really come through in a pinch
