Currently running a very successful build of wmc7+mb and other items

Its been a long time since I looked at xbmc. I also discovered media portal.

What is the status of true live tv using a tuner card on xbmc.
How about media portal 1 or 2

The WAF must be very high.

So if I cant program my harmony to work flawlessly and for it to be stable for her then WMC is where I will stay.

That depends. At this time, only WMC supports CableCARD copy protected LiveTV. IDK about the EPG's and DVR's of the other programs because I can't use them with my set up.

I suspect that if WMC is abandoned by MS, we'll start to see a lot of movement on the XBMC front for live tv support. For now, I'm happy with WMC but the future isn't bright.

Not again!

I'm more optimistic about WMC going forward for the next few years but would be wiling to try LiveTV from DVR's within other programs if they support playback of protected content. Hopefully these will be free of monthly DVR "taxes".

You should stay. Live TV support in XBMC is still in alpha, and you're likely to encounter bugs. I can't speak for media portal.

Media Portal looks to be a nice program but at this time it looks to be mainly focused on the European market.

Dont get me wrong and this isnt one of those bashing threads. Im just looking for something even easier and cleaner than wmc as far as usablity goes. XBMC is pretty very pretty. Media portal has huge potential. We have all read the things about wmc. and im not really worried about that at the moment. I used to run a myth tv box a few years back and things have gotten better. There is just so much info out there and I looked last night and finally i decided you know ill just ask!

I wouldn't expect any of the free offerings (xbmc/MP/etc) to offer DRM'd cable card anytime soon... cable labs charges a crap load of $$$ to do the mandatory certs... free/oss/etc people generally aren't sitting on a crap load of $$$ that they don't have other more pressing uses for...

also not sure how likely free useful EPG data is with free DVR's, just because someone has to pay for that too...(unless someone like google comes along and finds a way to scrape the data... and then makes it available for free)... for M$, that money is insignificant, even for a paid for app like Sage or BeyondTV it is fairly irrelevant/just a part of doing business...

NOTE: As one wise professional something once stated, I am ignorant & childish, with a mindset comparable to 9/11 troofers and wackjob conspiracy theorists. so don't take anything I say as advice...

Were just using an ota tuner and then "other sources" for different content. The only reason we have an ota tuner is to watch the news and for what i call "lazy tv"

lazy tv: the act of just having the tv on and watching some thing that you would not normally watch just because

XBMC has sponsors I think and the CableLab fee is $15k. As far as a guide service, there's information on the internet that is free, it is a matter of putting it into an EPG format that is usable. nextpvr does this but not for copy protected content at this time. I'm sure that if this went paid it would. The data is freely available at titantv but it isn't interactive. I think that these sorts of things can be brought together for playback of copy protected LiveTV in a program other than WMC.

you were just complaining that MM cost $100, now you want XBMC to pay $15K?
I bet they could use that $15K to better support other platforms, add more features that effect a broader audience then just US cable subscribers, etc...

totally agree on all the data for EPG is out there, it just isn't in a very useable format unless you pay for one of the EPG subscription services...

so how does wmc get its guide data. did M$ pay some one off?

Edit: it looks like both xbmc and media portal will pull local ota guide data just fine? I know mythtv does as well (gave up on myth tv, along time ago)

the internets are mighty... the data is out there... they probably found a good place to get it from... or came up with a good scraping method...

I'd be happy with one of those that supported my plain HDHomeRun for live TV OTA.

I haven't used it but I think NextPVR does. It works with Hauppauge OTA tuners.

OTA provides guide data in the bistream, some programs (like Myth) can pull the listings from that.

See what an anamorphoscopic lens can do,

MythTV works perfectly with HDHomeRun. It can either use the online PSID channel data, or you can pay $25/year to Schedules Direct for a 14 day listing. Myth will also pull down extended metadata from numerous online sources. IMO, the PSID stuff is hit or miss. Some stations are very bad about providing it and generally it's only for 8 hours ahead. Makes scheduling difficult.
