Hey all. Been playing around with Handbrake and need some help before converting my entire library.

For video playback of both sDVD and HD content on Apple (and possibly other branded mobile) devices, what is the better format; MKV or MP4?

I know Apple doesn't natively support MKV, but it seems there may be apps that can provide playback? Is that true? If so, any recommendations?

On a separate note, I tested converting a 720p DVD (about 120min) to see how large a 1:1 rip would be and it came to 1GB. Is that the norm? Can I expect any less without lossing too much quality?

Thanks

I'm not really sure what the advantage is between .mkv and .m4v technically. I'd imagine since they are both containers it depends on what your playback device/software prefers.

I can recommend this if you need to remux from .mkv to Apple compatible .m4v. I use it all the time and it does pretty much everything needed.

For strictly use with apple I would say no. If thats all the videos will be for its probably easier to use the format apple likes natively.

In general mkv is probably the best container as it supports a wide variety of video, audio and subtitles. A lot of stuff that won't really matter on an ipad.

Does AVPlayer work on ipad as well? The app doesn't have the + on it to show that it is compatible with both.

UPDATE: Nevermind there is a AVPlayerHD for the ipad.
