My Tivo units are near the end of their life and I'm considering HTPC. I used to use a HTPC in the early 2000s and it was definitely a "project". This time around I'm looking for something very stable and user friendly. DIY is fine, I just don't want to deal with manual upgrading/patching of software.

1) Has HTPC achieved this level of stability and usability yet (assuming intelligent component selection ala Assassin's guide)?
2) Does it make sense to look at cheaper Xeon server options? The assumption here is that server components are built with higher durability in mind.

Thanks, I look forward to your thoughts!
