I recently bought a new 120Hz TV and I was looking at the output settings in Windows 7 (display/screen resolution/advanced/monitor) it notes the name of my amp and says that it is set to 60 Hz. Should i force this to 120 Hz, or is this expected?

120hz is how many times per second the tv refreshes its signal, which will most likely be 60hz or 24hz, or some decimal number extremely close to either of those.

It cannot accept a 120hz signal.

If you hit the info or display button on your tv's remote you will see something like 1080p60 or if you are watching a bluray movie 1080p24. That is correct.

You will never see 1080p120

This will depend on the frame-rate of the source file and what your HDTV supports. Could be 24fps, or 30fps or varients thereof. It could even be 50fps or 25fps.
