The best wireless router out right now has got to be the mikrotik routerboard.
It's not dead simple like the netgear, linksys, dlink (all junk), but you can do whatever you want with it.
You buy this board:
And at whatever radios you want using mini pci cards.
So if you want 802.11b/g or 802.11n on 5.8, or even at the same time no problem. You can add a third radio to use as a wifi client if you want a directional antenna for an uplink interface to another radio.
In the firmware you can do anything with the firewall, it does radius, hotspot gateway, proxy, qos, mpls, several different routing protocols, ipsec, pppoe (client and server), pptp, and a bunch of other stuff.
From the radio perspective you can change anything including output power.
It even supports packet sniffing to wireshark and nice debugging tools.
The cli supports a scripting language that allows you to control anything including the beep.
So if you want it to beep whenever something associates, no problem.
Nothing else I've seen comes close.
