I purposely started watching for this probably 3-4 years ago. In 99% of the movies and tv shows its always some sort of apple laptop. In 3 movies I have seen a Sony VAIO. Im curious if Apple has some sort of contract with all of the movie studios or somethig. Has anyone seen any other brand than Sony or Apple? Has anyone seen a HTPC in a movie?

They typically pay for their logo to be shown. The deal is with the individual movie, not the studio. Apple knows most movie goers are younger, it's their target demographic. It's the same reason Coca Cola pays Disneyland and McDonalds to use their product exclusively. Get them while they're young and impressionable.

Microsoft is doing similar with shows like NCIS, and Hawaii Five-O. Almost every show you see something with a Windows logo, or someone mention or use Bing, Photosynth, a Windows Phone or whatever. No one is doing it for free, it's all being paid for, and often it's listed as a paid for placement in the credits.

It's probably because most TV shows and movies are Fiction and Apple knows that only in a fantasy world would there be that many Apple laptop users...tongue.gif

To add to the above, I once read an article about in-movie product placement.
This was about the 'Spider-man' movie, the first one by Sam Raimi.
There is a scene in the movie where William Dafoe is sitting and reflecting about becoming the Green Goblin. The shot starts with the camera focussed on a bottle of Maker's Mark for a couple of seconds and then pans away.
Apparently, the story goes that a case of 12 bottles was sent to the set. And then Sam (or someone) decided to add it to the scene.
Don't know if there were any talks before-hand but it seems a really inexpensive way to publicize your products.

Back in the old days, Sony used to pay for product placement of their TVs and video equipment almost as much as Apple does now.

I was watching Quantum of Solace the other day, and I think the cell phones were Nokia (in name)

I've seen Nokia quite a bit on advanced looking cell phones like Tony Stark's in Iron Man, but I think that in Iron Man the cell phone is actually an LG placement. None of the Bond, Iron Man, Avengers placements are ever for production line products though, so I guess it's a moot point.

It seems Sony Pictures always does Vaio product placements (like Zuckerburg's laptop in Facebook)

To answer your original question, no. I've seen a lot of movies, and can't ever recall seeing a ThinkPad, Dell, lenovo, acer, or asus product placement. I think Office Space had a lot of Xerox and IBM placement, but I'd have to go back and watch. It seems most office type sets use generic looking boxes

I have seen Dell and Sony laptops in a few movies recently but cant remember what they were. They were action ones like maybe the last transformers and die hard or something.

I have seen Cisco in a lot of things lately too and for real products too, unlike the cell phones as Dark_slayer mentioned.

Often you can spot the placement by which side they show. Can you see the Budweiser logo on that beer can? Product placement...

I was thinking about this the other day when watching House of Lies. I noticed they had Lenovo laptops and not Apple and I thought, "Wow. Not Apple for once."

I remember several years back the Toshiba tiny Librettos were in several sci-fi. In those days, all real laptops were thinkpads.

I've seen Sony and dell recently - but not generally so obviously purchased product placement as Apple.

Just about every character on the Big Bang Theory has a Dell laptop. And more than once they've made fun of the Apple 'Geniuses' -- who I believe are tech experts at their stores? But yet iPods and iPhones were featured in one or two episodes. Go figure.

Since we all know that with the Apple-branded laptop one can hack the alien network ("Independence Day"), why bother with anything else?biggrin.gif

Good time to buy computers and computer parts: NEVER

Just watched Transformers Dark of the Moon where they had Lenovo Laptops.

Good thing the movie was an Amazon Prime freebie...

Didn't they also have tons of Alienware laptop shots during the first couple seasons?

In terms of LFE, size does matter!

Yes and still do, but you're both correct since Alienware was purchased by Dell in 2006
