I think that's a little harsh. I don't necessarily agree with his choices, but he has a right to his opinion. Some people like to go high end. If that's what they want then more power to them. This is one man's thread of his choices, not a sticky or some sort of group consensus. It's also been pointed out in the thread that you don't really need to spend so much to get good performance, so the newbie's won't get confused. So I think we should just let it be.

Hmmm, so the only reason you posted in this thread is to state the original poster is a troll. I'm going to have to get back to you on that as I have to go look up again what a "troll" is again because I think I recall that that is actually the definition of of a troll. Please hold...

Thanks for holding. So yes, BruceD, you are the definition of a "troll" (I think I see your picture next to the definition in fact). Please read up here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Troll_(Internet)

So I'm building a HTPC for a business parter, here's what I put together with prices.
Picked up last weekend.
Intel i3 3225 (with HD 4000) from Micro Center for $123.50 plus tax (with 5% off coupon from previous purchase).
ASRock Z77 Pro4-M for $60 plus tax (with $50 off combo deal at Micro Center). (bios updated to 1.30)
Picked up today.
OCZ Vertex 3 90GB SSD for $57 plus tax (with 5% off coupon from coupon from weekend purchase). (firmware updated from 2.22 to 2.25)
Purchased last week.
LG 24x DVD burner OEM from Micro Center for $16.00 plus tax (was sold out yesterday, was told they would be getting more in this week though.)

Ordered online:
Scythe Samurai ZZ Rev.B SCSMZ-2100 Low Profile CPU Cooler for $36.00 plus tax
http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B007R7PPJK/ref=ox_sc_sfl_title_1?ie=UTF8&smid=A23NVCSO4PYH3S

Cooler Master Silent Pro M2 620w power supply for $94.17 shipped plus tax. (the 550w Cooler Master I wanted for the build was actually more expensive at $138.56 shipped plus tax on $160 after $40 MIR.)
http://www.superbiiz.com/detail.php?name=PS-620M2E3

1 4GB stick of Corsair Vengeance 8GB (2 x 4GB) low profile / low voltage 240-Pin DDR3 SDRAM DDR3 1600 (PC3 12800) Desktop Memory Model CML8GX3M2A1600C9W for $42.30 with free shipping plus tax with 10% off coupon received in e-mail for previous purchase (leaving 1 stick for another build if needed). 1 stick in slot 4 on motherboard (if both sticks are used, 2nd stick put in slot 2).
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820233199

With the Lian Li PC-C50B being on sale for 20% off at $128 with free shipping plus tax.
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16811112303
But an alternate if you want to go cheaper you could go with the SilverStone ML03B for $60 plus tax.
http://www.amazon.com/SilverStone-Aluminum-Steel-Center-ML03B/dp/B004GGUAUE/ref=sr_1_1?s=electronics&ie=UTF8&qid=1350348347&sr=1-1&keywords=SilverStone+HTPC+case
(verify if the CPU Cooler that you use is low profile enough for this case, I believe the Scythe Shuriken Rev. B SCSK-1100 for $30 will fit this case http://www.scythe-usa.com/product/cpu/043/scsk1000_detail.html . Also note that the USB 3.0 connector will be leaning from the ASRock motherboard due to the location of the HD rack in the SilverStone case, but it does fit with patience. I learned this from a previous build for another person with this motherboard and case.)

Total spent: $483-557 plus tax depending on HTPC case (with an extra 4GB stick of DDR3 memory).
Add $34 plus tax for the wireless keyboard with touchpad (I perfer a trackball, but this isn't for me and he prefers the touchpad).
http://www.amazon.com/Logitech-Wireless-Keyboard-Multi-Touch-920-003070/dp/B005DKZTMG/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1350349196&sr=8-1&keywords=logitech+wireless+keyboard
Add One 12' HDMI cable for $10.99
http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00852JU4C/ref=oh_details_o00_s00_i00
I always add one of these to my builds for $15 plus tax. (Instead of going over to a friends house with DVDs, I just take them ripped onto a SSD and pop it in one of these that are plugged into a couple USB ports).
http://platinum-micro-inc.amazonwebstore.com/Kingwin-HDCV1-2.5-inch-to-3.5/M/B004RCNRL6.htm

If he wants WiFi, I'll add it for $29.50 plus tax. http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0081Y0Y4E/ref=oh_details_o01_s00_i00

edit: Micro Center has dropped the price of the ASRock Z77 Pro4-M motherboard by $10 (so after $50 off it's $50 plus tax). Also, newegg has dropped the price and Cooler Master has a $15 MIR for the Silent Pro M2 620w power supply, it's now $90.98 shipped after the $15 MIR. So that's $470 to $544 for the system.
