The forum in general has been pretty calm and friendly these days. Also a tad slow though... Although I haven't been checking as many threads in this section recently either, I haven't really seen interesting or "hot" topics either.

I think HTPC just matured. That's part of it. A lot less new tech or things these days.

On the Asassin thing I think it's probably mostly he's just moved on and busy with his job and kids. Nothing wrong with that. People get bored with stuff too. I know I'm slightly bored around here these days I feel like a lot of things are very much "been there, done that" to some degree.

What I'm most surprised with is no one is taking about mediabrowser connect or sharing media and servers via media browser with each other. It's the best thing since sliced bread, I've really been enjoying it. (Is it public now?).

I think it's public now. Very strong recommendation to check it out! It's easy to use and works well. You can even email someone a web link to view your content on your server via web browser. Cool stuff.

That's not entirely off base, but there is more to it than that. (I'd say more, but I'm considering PM's from current and former members to still be private.)

I'll just say that I miss the knowledge that assassin had to share and leave it at that.

RAID protection is only for failed drives. That's it. It's no replacement for a proper backup.

Anyone know a better deal for a cheap but relatively quiet 80mm fan for this thing ? I am thinking of grabbing the silent ROSEWILL ones for $3.99 each. yes or no ?

Can't say it's a better deal, but I've had great luck with these 80mm Enermax fans, and they do go on sale every so often:

The Rosewill's are OOS at NewEgg currently, unless you bought them all .

I bought three. I wanted black with no lights, but clear plastic ones were in stock. I did that. It doesn't matter. I just want to quiet this pig down a bit.

So my fans arrived, wish me luck opening this bad boy up. I think the PSU is also very loud. Anyone have a good fix for that ?

Take apart the PSU and change out the fan. The only difference is you'll probably have to splice/solder the cables.

I can handle that. Voltage is the same and it should only be the two leads right ?

I'd buy a new PSU if it was simple and cheap enough.

I had a PSU fan go bad (got screeching loud) and just bought a three wire 80mm quiet fan. I don't think I used the third wire, but it was as simple as matching black with black and red with red.

If the current PSU isn't soldered down, but has a custom connector (probably some sort of blocky female plastic thing with a key) then you could pop out the pins from both plugs with a small screwdriver pushing in the hook/anchor bit and swap the plugs.
