It depends on what you're looking for. If you're looking for a new expander in a shiny retail box, it's going to be pretty expensive. Most people here are going for used equipment because there is a lot of value to be had. It also depends on if you want to just get an expander, or if you're looking for an entire solution including chassis.
If you tell us what you're trying to accomplish I can probably steer you in the right direction.
RAID protection is only for failed drives. That's it. It's no replacement for a proper backup.
