Hello all.

I have been reading your informative forum for a few weeks now and was hoping for a bit of general advice from the experts. I have built my own PC’s for the last 10 years or so but this time am considering using a shop to build it due to time constraints. I currently have a tower to the side of my TV and run Media portal / XBOX media player for fanart etc. Two weeks ago it died and I have now decided to buy a completely new system. I consider myself a ‘novice builder’ as it is only every couple of years when the PC dies and I am in need of an upgrade that I research parts and build.

The main purposes of my HTPC:

• A media player,
• to dload movies,
• tv capture,
• general browsing and email,
• gaming,

(I am aware that gaming is not the norm for a HTPC however I will just put up with the fan noise and minimise the noise as best I can)

Also to note:

- I intend to hook up my current storage drives to the new system (2 X 2 terabyte SATA, 3 X 1 terabyte SATA, 2 x small IDE drives)
- audio output to amp and then to 5+1 speaker setup,
- video output directly into HDTV via DVI/HDMI,
- I would like to control some functions by remote but will also have wireless keyboard and mouse hooked up.
- I am not sold on windows 8 however I understand there are enough threads about that already
- I can probably save myself $100 easily with the build and maybe another 100-150 with searching for cheaper parts (Australia) however I am happy with paying $250 extra for the convenience of buying from a shop with support

I have procured a quote from a local PC build shop and was hoping for some advice around the proposed componentry. Specifically if I have gone overboard anywhere in particular or if there are much better products available at a similar price point. Furthermore the case may prove to be too hot because of a lack of ample side venting?

My budget is in the region of 2k USD/AUD

Thank you all very much in advance for your assistance:

chip- Intel Core i5-3570 Processor $205.00

board- GIGA Z77X-UD5H-WB MB $268.00

NOCTUA NH-L9i does not look a good choice for 3570K. Check NH-L9i TDP Guidelines. A low-profile CPU cooler is not necessary in this chassis.

Don't forget to buy 3 x GELID PWM fan Y-cable.

Check Samsung 840 Pro. A lot faster than 520 for the same price.

Thanks for the tips - i will definitely re-assess the cpu cooling fan - good pick up.

And definitely need the Ycable adaptors for 5 fans. My trusty expert salesman did not mention these and said i could only have 4 fans!

Cheers,

Among the 4 system fan connectors of the mb, only 3 can control the fan speed (with only 1 independent PWM). So connect 2 x side to one, 2 x bottom to another, 2 x rear to the last. Or use Akasa FLEXA FP5 (power from PSU, PWM signal from one of the headers, RPM of one of the fans to the header).
