I was looking at building an HTPC years ago when I was on AVS researching home theater builds. My theater is now about 95% complete and now I've been researching HTPC's again and would like to attempt to build one. I have spent hours upon hours reading threads and different internet posts. I spent a lot of time reading Assassins blog as well.

Primary function will be for playing and storing movies, TV tuner/recorder, ability to extend to other tv's, no gaming (have PS3). It will be hooked up to a Marantz AV7005 preamp which will send video to a projector.

Here's what is important to me:
- TV tuner/PVR
- Bluray playback
- 7.1 audio
- 1080p

Here's the list I started with for components:

Hard Drive:
Seagate Barracuda ST1000DM003 1TB 7200 RPM SATA 6.0Gb/s 3.5" Internal Hard Drive -Bare Drive $69.99

Case:

Power Supply:
SeaSonic S12II 380B 380W ATX12V v2.3 80 PLUS BRONZE Certified Active PFC Power Supply $58.99

I would greatly appreciate any feed back or recommendations. I am totally a rookie at this
and I'm willing to upgrade/downgrade items as more knowledgable individuals see fit.

Thanks in advance for your input!

One change to the list:

Bought a Seagate 3TB HD for $89 from the egg - $20 more for an additional 2TB.

I haven't purchased anything else yet. Hopefully, I will get some feedback before purchasing the rest.

It looks like a nice build but I'd consider the below points:

- You could save a few bucks by downgrading the mobo. You won't be overclocking so H77 will be fine. I use the Asrock H77M (around $70) and have been very happy with it.
- Also, you'll want an SSD for the OS and progs drive. This greatly speeds up boot time and launching and browsing WMC / XBMC. You can pick up a 128GB drive like the OCZ Vertex 4 on sale quite regularly for $80.
- BluRay burner is not really necessary. You're much better off expanding your HDD storage over time and just ripping disks.
- Lots of people like the PC Power and Cooling Silencer MK III 400W PSU. Its quiet and modular so could clean up the case a bit. Its also $10 cheaper than the Seasonic.

Good luck with the build!

A couple of suggestions:

- Why not choose DDR3-1866 or even DDR3-2133 if you are going with Z77, or else ASRock H77 Pro4/MVP is enough.
- LG WH14NS40 is newer, faster and cheaper. (Its retail box BH14NS40 includes CyberLink suites, but ...)
- Seasonic G Series 550W (80 PLUS Gold), $70 ($55 AR), is a great buy (the best buy, imo).

Thank you for the feedback ljo000 and renethx!

I plan to save some $ on the motherboard and go with with Asrock H77 Pro4/MVP. I'll use the extra $ to purchase some SSD (128GB). I'm also leaning on the PC Power PSU. After more thought, I probably will never use the burner on the bluray player and will more than likely just go with a player.

I'll see if there's any good cyber Monday deals on what I'm looking for. Either way, I plan to order everything some time this week.

I bought an Xbox bundle this weekend, which I plan to use as an extender to my living room TV.

Here's the list of items I have ordered as of right now:

Intel Core i3-3225 Ivy Bridge $144.99
ASRock H77 Pro4/MVP $79.99
nMEDIAPC 6000B HTPC Case $71.99
PC Power and Cooling Silencer MK III 400W Power Supply $49.99 after rebate
LG Blu-ray Burner (WH14NS40) $54.99
G.SKILL Ripjaws X Series 8GB (2 x 4GB) Desktop Memory $24.99
Seagate Barracuda 3TB Internal Hard Drive $89.99
Ceton InfiniTV 4 Cable TV Tuner Card $159.00
Samsung 830 128GB SSD $89.00
Microsoft Windows 7 $91.10
Shipping and Handling $27.32
Assassins Guides $25.00

So far my build totals $908.35 and my goal was to stay and $1,000. I still need to pick up a wireless keyboard and I already have a Logitech Harmony One remote. Once I read more through the guides I may need some addtional software to get everything complete.

Once everything arrives i plan to take a day or two of vacation and hopefully at least get my first HTPC up and running. I have to use vacation days as my wife is already giving me a hard time for reading this forum and Assassins guides every night for a couple weeks. smile.gif

Wish me luck!
