All of a sudden, the last 2 days, our Windows 7 computer is running very slow. We have no idea why. What are some easy things to do or check? Our internet service is Road Runner Standard, 10 Mbps. Thanks.

Is computer runnig slow, or is "internet" running slow? 2 different things.

6 TV's in the house on FiOS and we only pay $4.99/month to connect them all!!! Power to the CableCard and WMC7!!!

Re-setting router did no good. If what you mean is unplugging it for a minute.

I appears to be computer running slow, not internet. About 2:00 am this morning, I ran a speed test on speedtest.net and it showed this: Ping = 605ms, Download = 10.96, Upload = 0.82. And at this time, I was checking different forums, and it was VERY slow going.

Open other programs that aren't web based
  • Windows Explorer
  • Control Panel
  • Office
  • Adobe

Are they taking longer than normal? If so, then you've got other problems. If it's just browsing that takes a long time then . . .

You're ping is awfully high. Comcast at home is rarely above 50ms

In the following order
  1. Turn off your computer
  2. Unplug your router
  3. Unplug your modem (get a screwdriver and take the battery out for 1 minute as well)
  4. Put battery back in modem, and reconnect power
  5. After all the normal modem lights are on, reconnect power to router
  6. Boot computer

I would start the computer in safe mode, & see if it acts differently than normal start mode
If your computer is significantly faster in safe mode, it is software related
If on the other hand it is just as sluggish in safe mode, you have a hardware issue

My setup:
TV: Samsung plasma 59" pn59d550, DVR: Cisco 8642HD, HTPC: Acer Aspire E1-570,
Peachtree audio DAC-iT, Logitech Harmony 650 remote, Logitech MediaBoard Pro Bluetooth k/b
Receiver: Harman Kardon HK 3490, Speakers: Mission m34i + Mission MS10 sub, Nexus 7 2nd gen
