For the past few weeks, my HTPC has been locking up on me at Random intervals. When this happens, it doesn't accept any commands via the keyboard, remote, or mouse, however, if a video or music file is playing, it will continue to do so. To get it back working, I need to do a hard boot by holding down the power button. This seems to happen every hour or so. I tried an OS reistall and updating drivers, but the problem persists.

I had also noticed that the fans were spinning real fast, so I downloaded Speed Fan and got some really weird readings. The two cores were both in the low 40C, but it was showing the CPU temp as 120C+, which is impossible as it would melt my entire board at that temp. However, I was wondering if this reading could be the result of a faulty sensor somewhere that is then telling the PC to lock up?

I also downloaded Core Temp, and Checked in the Bios and they also show the cores at about 40 C, but I couldn't see where either gave me the actual CPU temp.

I have also added new thermal paste to the CPU and the temps seem to the same as they were prior.

Any suggestions? I did a memory test and that came back fine, so I guess if there are no other suggestions, I either need to try to swap out the CPU, or try a new power supply.

It's an I3, not sure of the exact model though.
