Read this and stop your complaining. Then enjoy your improved copy paste dialogs, task manager, built-in anti-virus, File History, Storage Spaces, etc.

I really don't see what all the fuss is. I have W8 since release. All it is is adding a start screen to W7 and renaming, moving some things around. Beyond that, W8 is without a question the best OS I have ever used IMHO. I love it. cool.gif

I rolled out Win8 to all the computers in the house (5 total) and have not complaints. I don't like the Metro half of it so the first thing I did was install StartIsBack on them all ($5 for 5 activations).

Like was already mentioned, install a start button app and stop complaining.

I just created a shortcut to shut down the computer. Cost--free.

This is exactly what I have told people. It's windows 7 with a fancy tile based start screen. I have it on my htpc and love the apps. Everything is full screen, just what I need. Looks great on my 60 inch tv.

Indeed. The biggest single complaint is Metro with most people. Remove this using a Start Button replacement, and most of the problems go away. There are still some compatibility issues with some hardware, and it's a shame Media Center has been crippled, but you can't have it all.

I personally think Metro will be radically overhauled in Windows 9 (or Project Blue). It's a v1 attempt that is just not fit for purpose, and this time, just too great a change for people to adapt to on the desktop. Windows 8 will be a dead duck with enterprises as well.

If you look around, you can even bring desktop gadgets back to 8 if you want. I still wish they'd left Aero in though, at least as an option. I still, by far, prefer the look/feel of the Windows 7 desktop.

Me either. I guess he is talking about the removal of the "boot to wmc at startup" from the task settings.

The thread doesn't make it seem so bad. I have only tested the waters by playing with someone else's laptop. I felt very lost with the "metro" UI thing but am willing to learn it. See, I am in need of a new computer but have been kinda scared to take the leap to W8. redface.gif I am mostly a Mac user at home and a Windows 7 user at work. However I am looking to replace an aging Macbook and would like to go with something windows based but like I said I'm a bit worried to make the switch to W8.

If you don't want to learn Metro, just install one of the many start button replacements and have it boot directly to the desktop. I did it like that for my wife's and mother-in-law's laptops because I didn't want to deal with the tech support. Made it just like Win7 for them. The other thing is to remap the Open With for certain files so they don't open with the Metro App, just as .jpg files.

This made me laugh.

It's only 3 clicks to shutdown with the charms bar and you can do this from within metro apps also.

Doesn't sound like a great value proposition to me.

I spent $1 (there are even free solutions) and it took about 30 seconds to install.

This Win 8 hate is becoming a bit silly.

And I'll do that if I want to reboot, but I shut down at least once a day. So that's at least two clicks saved each day! wink.gif

The only drawback is having that shortcut on the taskbar there is not "are you sure" prompt after the click, so it would be relatively easy to accidentally shut down.

Learning a new OS is fun. People who hate Win8 seemingly are people who don't enjoy such things.

I haven't upgraded any Win7 machines yet because one is the wife's, and she's not really one to enjoy a new OS, and the other is my HTPC which currently works just fine doing it's HTPC tasks, and seldom shuts down or boots, and only uses three programs. There the benefits of Win8 are truly marginal.

I think the skepticism is warranted.

30 seconds was the time it takes to make Win 8 function like Win 7... adding a start button and skipping Metro.

The retail price of Win 8 is going to soon be the same as the retail price of Win 7. What a shocker.

As of right now on Amazon: Win 7 Home Premium Retail Price $199 / Sale Price $162.24.

Start screen vs start button your choice... I like the extremely easy to customize screen.

Anyone not able to figure out how to close metro apps? There is more than one way!
