This showed up in Windows Update. Has anybody installed it? Is it working okay?
This article describes a platform update for Windows 7 Service Pack 1 (SP1) and Windows Server 2008 R2 SP1. This update improves the features and performance of the following components:
Windows Imaging Component (WIC)
Windows Advanced Rasterization Platform (WARP)
Windows Animation Manager (WAM)
XPS Document API
H.264 Video Decoder
JPEG XR codec
I have it installed. It looks like general directx maintenance update; fixing some bugs and new features for software developers.
Okay. I use LAV et al for decoding video but I was wondering if this update was going to change the registry and break my custom codecs that work very well for my on my HTPC right now.
I use LAV filters, reclock, and a bunch of other filters like most people here. I didnt notice anything different after the update. It may have fixed some minor issues and new features for developers; but I didnt notice that ether. Id say its pretty safe.
It's a prerequisite for installing IE10 on Windows 7. It's a backport of features from Windows 8 to fully support some of its features.
Thans vladd! It looks like it could be an issue using the WMC player but right now I am playing an mkv with h.264 in it using MPC-HC with madVR and LAV just fine. I am a bit concerned going forward if h.264 is ever used by Charter in this area. It seems to effect users of NextPVR. I've looked into that before but due to DRM I don't use it. Is this mostly in Europe.
(BTW, sorry about all that racous in the Cinavia thread about viruses and such.. I was on a rant about something totally different there..)
If you are using anything other than the MS DTV-DVD Video Decoder for H.264 (LAV in your case) in your player of choice, you are not affected at all by the update. Some people were using the MS decoder with NextPVR and they are the only ones (ie: NextPVR users) affected.
Re the other thread: I get where you are coming from and totally agree with you. I was just trying to prove a point in regards to Cinavia... lost cause that it is.
So if Charter starts using h.264 then I may have a problem with the player in WMC for Live/Recorded TV playback just like NextPVR users in Europe are experiencing now?
(I'll be clear, Cinavia is not a virus.)
You shouldn't have a problem. I should have said that "if you are using the MS decoder in a third party (non MS) player" like MPC or NextPVR. The decoder still works in WMC/WMP.
As a side note, you can't use the MS decoder in third party appls in Windows 8.
