I have a HTPC with a HD 7970

My question is: can I use HDMI to connect my PC to my Receiver for sound, and another HDMI from my PC to connect to my TV?

Because my receiver does not support 3D but my TV does.

Might work, just make sure to set the receiver as the default audio device in the sound control panel.

Not likely, will probably not even be detected without a display active on the receiver. Might be able to get around this by hooking a hdmi splitter between the htpc and the 2 devices though honestly I have no idea if that would work.

The answer is yes. A lot of people do this to fix handshake and EDID problems. You need to set up windows to extend your displays.

Every once in a while you will loose the mouse or an icon on the phantom display, but it doesn't happen too often.
Your also more susceptible to ground loops.
