The HTPC is used mainly as an OTA DVR. Sometimes I watch Hulu, or a network such as CBS.com, or a cable website in case I missed a program, that is presuming the program is available. But it's probably used 95% for OTA content. With multiple tuners I don't have worry about programs overlapping. I have a satellite DVR & a Blu-ray player for other content.
Basically I record, watch, delete. I used to record & save programs & movies with a DVD recorder that has an ATSC/QAM tuner. And would also use that to record stuff off a cable DVR or satellite DVR. But I hardly ever watch movies a second time so I stopped saving them. My HTPC needs appear to be fairly simple compared to other people's.
